Though unable to eat pralines - or anything more chewy than a Lorna Doone - Baby Gruenwald loved the idea of pralines, and especially creole pralines, so it was no surprise that his hotel in New Orleans specialized in the yummy treat, its popular mail order business supplying them to a hungry world.

While not a fan of the secret rites of voodoo himself, getting the iconic Voodoo Queen, Marie Laveau, to endorse his pralines was a prestigious achievement, as she was notoriously difficult to please, and had been dead for over three decades at the time the deal was signed.

Afraid of “getting voodooed,” as he called it, Baby Gruenwald would never spend the night in New Orleans if he could help it, and on the rare occasion that he was forced to stay over, would arrange to sleep on an inflatable raft in the baptismal font in the east transept of St. Louis Cathedral.
