With awed reverence, I call upon the pure and sacred Stars, The spirits of Celestial Realms, and daughters of Night. In whirling circles of eternal fires, the source of life, You have poured your light out upon the darkness, To make a path the Fates have shown unto the Wise, In Seven kingdoms run you with wandering flames, unwearied diamond truth forever piercing the Stygian veil, Hail joyful, dazzling, and ever wakeful fires, And on my desires shine with high regard, These sacred rites attend, and end our works devoted to your praise.

Though unable to eat pralines - or anything more chewy than a Lorna Doone - Baby Gruenwald loved the idea of pralines, and especially creole pralines, so it was no surprise that his hotel in New Orleans specialized in the yummy treat, its popular mail order business supplying them to a hungry world.
While not a fan of the secret rites of voodoo himself, getting the iconic Voodoo Queen, Marie Laveau, to endorse his pralines was a prestigious achievement, as she was notoriously difficult to please, and had been dead for over three decades at the time the deal was signed.
Afraid of “getting voodooed,” as he called it, Baby Gruenwald would never spend the night in New Orleans if he could help it, and on the rare occasion that he was forced to stay over, would arrange to sleep on an inflatable raft in the baptismal font in the east transept of St. Louis Cathedral.

Alexander Marshack's book was first written in 1968 and published soon after. The present edition I have explored was entirely re-edited and upgraded by the author in 1991. The research, and the fieldwork, for this book, were done essentially after the Second World War at a time when new techniques and technology were emerging in archaeological research. Marshack assumed what was available and used that the best he could, and as such was able to bring Ice Age archaeology to a new level of understanding. But we must not measure what he wrote and published with the criteria and parameters we can use today in this field where technology and actual research have been speeding up so fast over the last ten or twenty years that have brought up more than the previous seventy years. Yet we have to assess Marshack’s work within the context of today’s knowledge showing not what he missed, but what he could not know, hence centering our evaluation on what he was able to do and he could have done with what he had at his disposal.
What appears clearly today in the field of Paleolithic archaeology is that we need to develop two levels of analysis that were systematically missing before. The first one is linguistic. All these paleolithic paintings, engravings, and sculptures were associated with some language, to be described, to be designated and to be used in what probably was serious rituals. That language was in Europe a set of Turkic dialects that have been saved today by becoming Basque.
But the next development needed today is to understand the social, and cultural position of women in this society only guided by the need to survive and the need to expand. Women were the key and center of this urgency. That's what Alexander Marshack saw and was not able to exploit, explore, understand. And that's what this book is all about.
Seven Paleolithic Venuses and one lion intruder.
The passing of every old man or woman means the passing of some tradition, some knowledge of sacred rites possessed by no other...Consequently the information that is to be gathered, for the benefit of future generations, respecting the mode of life of one of the great races of mankind, must be collected at once or the opportunity will be lost for all time.
Edward S. Curtis
All right. So here’s the first of the black rites; Lunar purification.
You misuse this and my lady will make sure you regret it.
Gather rainwater in an earthenware basin, and leave it to soak up the moonlight for the entirety of the full moon. Take it into a jar, or, if you are lucky enough to have it, a clay pot, and seal it in place. Wait for the new moon and dip the item to be purified, or the hands of the afflicted, into the water, pouring it back into the basin if needed. Let the contaminants fall away. Return the water to the earth afterwards; Be more careful with contamination the next time. This is not for easy purification, but for truly hard targets and things tainted heavily such that only the moon and the rain can have a hope of washing them clean of defilement. Pouring the water from the jar into an area will do the equivalent of purifying and consecrating it for some time. This will decay at a rate variable based upon the area’s background count and environmental saturation, but will probably be good for at least a day and a half. It is possible to store the water, but it loses effectiveness.
