𝐒𝐇𝐄 𝐂𝐀𝐍'𝐓 𝐁𝐄𝐋𝐈𝐄𝐕𝐄 𝐓𝐇𝐀𝐓 𝐒𝐇𝐄'𝐒 𝐃𝐎𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐓𝐇𝐈𝐒 .     but  her  feet  are  moving  almost  without  her  own  volition ,  quietly  tracing  somewhat  familiar  hallways  ( not  as  familiar  as  the  halls  leading  to  percy’s  room  or  workshop ,  but  she’s  avoiding  those ,  will  keep  avoiding  those ) .     she’s  been  keeping  to  herself  recently ,  but  she’s  desperate  not  to  be  alone  --  and  even  if  julius  may  turn  her  away ,  he  won’t  hurt  her  feelings .     small  fist  knocks  on  the  doorframe ,  hovering  in  the  doorway  --  half - hidden  in  her  awkwardness .          “ julius ?     what  are  you  working  on ? ”          and  she  braces  herself  for  a  rejection .

𝐀𝐍𝐀𝐋𝐘𝐓𝐈𝐂𝐀𝐋𝐋𝐘, 𝐀𝐒𝐓𝐑𝐈𝐃 𝐔𝐍𝐃𝐄𝐑𝐒𝐓𝐀𝐍𝐃𝐒 𝐖𝐇𝐀𝐓 𝐄𝐀𝐃𝐖𝐔𝐋𝐅'𝐒 𝐉𝐎𝐁 𝐈𝐒.     she  understands  that  he  understands  it ,  that  he  showed  back  up  after  only  a  week  of  retirement  to  guard  her  after  an  incident  that  made  the  news ,  that  he’s  been doing  this  since  they  graduated  school .     understanding  it ,  however ,  doesn’t  make  it  any  less  horrifying  when  he  has  to  do  it  --  when  she’d  let  her  guard  down  upon  entering  her  office  for  half  a  second ,  when  the  first  blast  is  intended  to  knock  both  of  them  out  at  once .     wulf  takes  the  worst  of  it ,  of  course  he  does  --  tucks  her  behind  him  as  if  on  instinct  ( it  probably  is ) ,  but  they  both  know  that  he  isn’t  the  target . . . and  that  neither  of  them  may  get  a  chance  to  act ,  surprised  as  they  were .     but  astrid  is  capable  on  her  own ,  reaction  time  or  no  reaction  time ,  and  people  so  like  to  forget  this  ( as  if  she  hadn’t  trained  at  the  same  time  as  wulf  and  caleb ,  as  if  her  name  wasn’t  also  on  the  list  of  testimonials ,  as  if  she  hadn’t  been  the  one  to  collar  trent  in  the  end )  .     prone  or  no ,  spells  quickly  exchanged ,  non - casting  hand  pressed  against  the  growing  pain  in  her  side .     she  can’t  look  over  at  eadwulf ,  can’t  bear  to  see  if  he’s  dead  beside  her  --  but  then  he’s  there ,  closer ,  moving  as  if  to  employ  him  in  her  defense .     she  watches  his  hand  raise ,  his  fingers  shake ,  but  the  hurt  he’d  sustained  earlier  holds  him  at  bay  --  knows  the  look  on  his  face ,  knows  that  he  can’t  get  to  her .

𝐁𝐔𝐓 𝐖𝐇𝐀𝐓 𝐖𝐔𝐋𝐅 𝐂𝐀𝐍'𝐓 𝐃𝐎, 𝐀𝐒𝐓𝐑𝐈𝐃 𝐂𝐀𝐍 𝐃𝐎 𝐇𝐄𝐑𝐒𝐄𝐋𝐅.     a  well - timed  counterspell  and  a  quick  banishment  thrown  at  the  unknown  assailant ,  concentration  firmly  clasped  in  her  mind  as  she  drags  herself  over  to  wulf  --  as  one  hand  searches  her  pockets  for  the  greater  healing  potion  she  knows  she  has  on  her  person  somewhere .     his  breaths  are  loud  in  her  ears ,  her  own  even  louder ,  but  she  begins  to  fill  the  space  with  the  sound  of  her  voice  --  the  sound  of  zemnian .          “ wulf  --  stay  with  me ,  you’re  not  allowed  to  go  anywhere .     if  you  die  because  of  me  i’ll  never  forgive  you . ”          never  forgive  herself ,  more  like ,  but  whatever  she  thinks  will  help  him  hold  on .

cassandra  smiles  up  at  him ,  though  it’s  shaky  at  best .     the  look  on  his  face  is  earnest ,  as  it  almost  always  is  --  but  cassandra  has  been  left  behind  before ,  and  her  every  instinct  screams  against  the  parting .     but  she  knows  that  grog  wants  to  go ,  and  that  she  isn’t  being  left  on  her  own  ( isn’t  being  left  bleeding  out  in  the  snow )  .          “ it  isn’t  a  goodbye  forever ,  grog , ”          she  says ,  and  she’s  determined  for  that  to  be  true .          “ we’ll  see  each  other  again ,  i’m  sure  of  it .     you’d  better  come  home  at  least  once . ”

𝐂𝐀𝐒𝐒𝐀𝐍𝐃𝐑𝐀 𝐒𝐈𝐓𝐒 𝐀𝐓 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐄𝐍𝐃 𝐎𝐅 𝐇𝐄𝐑 𝐁𝐄𝐃 ,  hands  folded  in  her  lap .     she  hadn’t  gotten  dressed  this  morning  --  and ,  so  it  seems ,  one  of  those  who  was  supposed  to  make  her  so  had  gone  for  her  oldest  brother .     she  glances  up  from  her  lap  to  meet  his  eyes ,  and  she  has  to  fight  back  a  sudden  rush  of  tears  ( she  can’t  cry  in  front  of  her  brother ,  of  all  people )  .     she  bites  the  inside  of  her  lip  before  she  speaks ,  weighing  what  to  say .          “ i  --  i  don’t  think  i  can  go  to  lessons  today ,”          she  admits ,  voice  trembling .     she  can’t  sit  in  a  room  with  percy  and  anders ,  today  of  all  days .

𝐀𝐒𝐓𝐑𝐈𝐃 𝐒𝐓𝐈𝐋𝐋 𝐇𝐀𝐒 𝐘𝐄𝐓 𝐓𝐎 𝐀𝐃𝐉𝐔𝐒𝐓 𝐓𝐎 𝐓𝐇𝐈𝐒 𝐂𝐈𝐓𝐘.     it’s  louder ,  brighter  than  blumenthal  --  but  quieter ,  less  tense  than  rexxentrum .     part  of  her  has  come  to  accept  that  there  is  no  active  harm  intended  against  any  of  the  three  of  them ,  but  an  acceptance  of  such  a  thing  means  that  it’s  far  more  likely  to  be  incorrect  --  especially  in  recent  understanding .     with  that  winding  around  in  her  brain ,  she  can  hardly  sleep ,  and  she  most  certainly  can’t  be  alone .     the  lord  and  lady  of  this  city  have  made  it  clear  that  they  can  do  as  they  will . . . but  habit  dies  hard ,  and  she  creeps  out  of  her  room  to  head  toward’s  wulf’s .     the  last  thing  she  expects  when  she  shuts  the  door  behind  herself  is  to  come  face  to  face  with  him ,  and  brown  eyes  go  wide  in  surprise  before  the  look  softens .          “ i  was  coming  to  find  you , ”          she  whispers ,  soft  in  the  still  night  air  of  the  castle .

astrid  stops  somewhat  respectfully  as  @.weyfaren  jumps  in  front  of  her ,  quirking  an  eyebrow  at  the  woman .          “ can  i  help  you ,  veth ? ”          veth  has  made  it  no  secret  that  she  doesn’t  care  for  either  of  the  two  former  voIstruckers ,  but  the  nein  have  proved  nothing  except  for  confrontational  in  the  past ,  and  perhaps  astrid  shouldn’t  be  surprised  that  veth  is  going  to  such  an  extent  to  get  the  archmage  alone .     the  real  surprise  is  going  to  come  when  veth  gets  to  the  reason  why  she’s  done  so  --  there  are  many  things in  astrid’s  life  and  past  that  could  be  in  veth’s  head  at  the  moment .

“Do they really bother you that much?” Keyleth asks, leaning back on her hands.  Her head lolls to one side, an eyebrow arching up as she regards Scanlan with a thoughtful expression. “I know you like to joke around and act like nothing gets to you, but I don’t think that’s true,” she pushes herself up to sit, bending one of her legs in front of her while the other rests against the ground.  Rolling her lips together, her eyebrows furrow now as she attempts to get an inclination one way or another from him.  Scanlan is as much of an enigma as ever.                “Look, you said you didn’t want to talk about them, but I’m just curious. When are we ever going to have a chance to talk like this again?” their eyes flash with enthusiasm. “I’ve never had one, but this is what slumber parties are like, right?” They are suddenly very excited at the prospect.  Never mind that they are simply on watch together and nothing more.

“ nor  would  i  wish  to , ”          arya  says  warmly ,  clasping  brom’s  hand  tightly  with  her  own  in  greeting .     she’s  knee - shakingly  relieved  that  he’s  alive ,  that  he’s  returned  --  but  her  composure  is  too  consistent  to  show  in  any  place  other  than  her  eyes .          “ i  think  that  the  boy  would  be  more  than  lost  without  you , ”          she  says ,  more  quietly ,  switching  to  elvish  to  prove  her  seriousness  ( and  to  avoid  the  boy  himself  understanding  her )  .
