How Vvardvarks Are Marsupials
by popular* request...
Gorne wolves are not actually wolves, mainly since large mammals can't really survive in Morrowind due to its unique ecology and landscape (hence why it's mostly lizards and giant insects and also literal Daedra; rats notwithstanding) and their total isolation from where wolves could possibly exist in or around Morrowind is a little suspicious.
So instead, it is possible that they are thylacines. Mostly because of their fur pattern (stripes) and their habitat.
To be specific, thylacines that evolved into "Gorne wolves" from a much smaller indigenous marsupial species through island gigantism. This smaller (and likely insectivorous) marsupial species could've possibly been a numbat or a fantasy variant.
There's those stripes again! Never mind the overall anatomy of the animal.
This could be the same "ashlands stock" that Magister Varkenel has mutated into the vvardvark, which would track with its diet and anatomy.
