The Groomsmen
Characters: Timeskip Kuroo Tetsurōxf!reader, Bokuto Kōtarō, Kozume Kenma, Akaashi Keiji, Tsukishima Kei, Kai Noboyuki, Yaku Morisuke
Summary: Kuroo is getting married and a lot of things are going wrong. Good thing he has the best groomsmen and even better best man to help out.
Warning: 🟢Green. It's about 2360 words so brace yourselves (some of it are song lyrics though so about 2200 words?. There's some Bokuto booty-shaking but mostly it's just sappy as hell.
AN: Inspired by this TikTok Video because in my head, that's Bokuto. I am also binge watching "Say Yes To The Dress" and realized that there are a lot of overbearing moms. She's the bride, it's her dress! Just let her wear the dress she wants! Damn!
To everyone who knew Kuroo, it was a miracle that he was the first one in his friend group to get married. Coming from a home with separated parents, he had always been adamant about marriage in general. The whole concept had just been something he never believed in. After all, he was never there when his parents were “happy and in love”. His sister would always tell him what it was like before but Kuroo had so much difficulty imagining it.
It took a very special woman to make him realize that not all relationships are doomed to failure, not all arguments turn into big screaming matches, not all couples eventually hate each other.
After all, he’s five years into this relationship and you have never given him reason to think you’d leave or hurt him. Every argument ended with apologies and promises that you both kept.
You were the one thing in his life that he knew would be there till the end of time.
“So… how’s that?” Kuroo asked the group of men in front of him.
“Is it really okay to mention your parents divorce at your wedding?” Kai asked, head tilted with uncertainty.
Kuroo scratched his head and glanced at the paper with his scribbled wedding vows.
“I think it adds a nice touch” Yaku shrugged.
“Yeah, he was a real bummer back then” this coming from Kenma, of all people?
“And now he’s getting married!” Bokuto exclaimed in a very overdramatic fashion that turned everyone’s’ attention to him.
“What?” Tsukishima raised his eyebrow.
“I saw it on TV, when a friend gets married, you talk about lovey-dovey stuff and then the entourage just says, ‘and now you’re getting married!’. Oh no, I forgot to be all teary about it”
This is one of the reasons Kuroo wanted Bokuto as his best man. He originally thought it should be Kenma but he needed humour and that Bokuto-brand of assurance if he gets cold feet.
All the other groomsmen agreed, even going so far to say that being the best man is too much work and none of them are willing to do any of that.
Kenma’s “I’ll hit you if you get cold feet” sealed the deal and he knew he made the right choice.
“I’m not sure what you’re watching but that’s not how this works” Kenma muttered, “And your vows are fine. It’s the truth and actually kind of sweet. It’s like you’re saying that she made you believe in love again”
“That is what I’m trying to say” Kuroo frowned, “Was it too subtle? I want the message loud and clear”
“It’s probably because it sounded like a speech” Akaashi offered. “And since it’s a vow, add actual promises that you will keep once you’re married. Also, add some things about her that made you realize she’s who you want to marry. I could help you if you want.”
“As expected of Akaashi” Yaku nodded. “Wait, is that why he’s a groomsman? So, someone can edit your vows?”
Kuroo huffed. Of course not. His friendship with Akaashi was not as loud and obvious as the one he had with Bokuto but Kuroo considers him as one of his closest friends.
Before he could deny the accusation, however, his phone began to ring. It was not a tone he could ignore. It was the one specifically assigned for you.
“Hey Kitten, what’s wrong?”
“How do you-“ you paused, realizing it would be stupid question to ask. Kuroo always knew when something was bothering you, as if he had telepathy. “I just wanted to hear your voice for a bit.”
“What’s wrong?” he repeated, hearing the stress in your tone.
With a long sigh, you tell Kuroo that everything seems to be falling apart. You sounded close to crying and Kuroo didn't like that.
Excusing himself from the guys, he listened to you rant and ramble about all the things that has been going wrong in the preparations for the wedding.
There were a barrage of problems starting from a guest insisting he RSVP’d with a plus one when he didn’t, the bridesmaids who are fighting because of their dresses, the bakery they were supposed to get their cake suddenly getting a cease and desist order due to health risks, the flower girl they have yet to find and finally-
“-I can’t find a wedding dress! It’s either ugly or extremely expensive! Why can’t there be a cheap one that’s pretty? Why do I have to sell my organs and our first-born child to get a decent wedding dress?”
First, he needed to calm you down. When that was done, he proceeded to addressing the problems you just listed. He can take some of the burden off. While he can’t do anything about your bridesmaids and choosing a dress, he can at least take care of the other things.
When the call ended, he returned to the guys who had just finished getting their measurements taken by the tailor.
“Something wrong?” Bokuto asked, worried.
Kuroo relayed the problems they were currently facing. One by one, the guys volunteered to a task. Yaku and Kenma will be handling the wedding dress and the bridesmaids’ dresses, Tsukishima will be taking care of the cake, Kai and Akaashi will be assisting with the caterers and handling the guest management and seating, and Bokuto…
“Uh, what?” Kuroo wondered if he heard his friend right.
“I’m gonna be the flower girl! Well, in this case, the flower man.”
It was so unexpected and so Bokuto that none of them could stop themselves from laughing.
“Bo-” Kuroo doesn’t even know where to start with that.
“No, no, listen!” Bokuto was quick to cut him off, “You’re the first one to get married. None of us have any kids yet, right? I’m gonna be on the entourage anyway, so why not me? And I can also be the ring bear!”
“ring bearer” Kenma corrected.
“It’s not a bear?”
“Why would it be-“ Kenma looked confused as hell. “That’s not the point, it’s ring bearer, it’s a kid who bears the rings”
“Oh… oh, okay. That makes sense”
“Uh, Bokuto-san-” Akaashi tried to interject but Bokuto was already saying how it’s a great idea and he’ll tell you about it.
No one managed to stop the ace from calling you.
To their shock, you actually said yes. You were either extremely stressed that you didn’t even understand what Bokuto suggested or you really were onboard with it. Either way, one thing is certain: Bokuto is going to be the flower man.
…
“You look very beautiful” Kenma mused, a soft smile on his face as he admired the bride.
“Like a fairy!” Lev grinned.
“More goddess than fairy, it is from the Persephone Collection” Alisa sighed happily.
“Thanks to you guys.” you grinned, twirling a to show off the very pretty dress that was definitely way above your budget.
Kenma somehow managed to convince you to let him pay for it. You thought he will just accompany you and the girls for dress shopping but to your confusion, he brought you to what you thought was a photoshoot.
Yaku had been waiting for you with the Haiba siblings and next thing you knew, you were swept in a whirlwind of people fussing over you, taking your measurement and showing you dresses after dresses.
Names like Vera Wang, Monique Lhuillier, Atelier Pronovias and many others you can’t even pronounce were mentioned, terms you've never heard before in you life were thrown, laces and silks and all sorts of fabrics were shown to you and then... time stopped.
You found the perfect dress.
Kenma forbade everyone in the room to tell you the price. It was non-negotiable.
Kuroo had been itching to see it but even his groomsmen hid it form him, insisting that it’s bad luck. In the end, Kenma had taken the dress for safekeeping until the big day, even hiring the make-up and hair stylists with the help of Alisa.
Kenma also paid for your bridesmaid dresses.
You don't know what it was about Kenma and Lev but for some bizarre reason, your bridesmaids were well behaved and did not bicker when the two men were present.
You knew Lev is a model and is extremely good looking. You also knew that Kenma was popular but you didn’t know your friends watched his streams. It’s either that or they just found Kenma extremely appealing.
The problem with the flower girl was also resolved, thanks to Bokuto who insisted to fill in the role. When he called you to propose the idea, you laughed, thinking he was joking. But as he explained it to you, you realized that you liked the idea.
It would be funny and you wanted everyone to have fun. People say that the wedding should be about the bride but you never liked that. A wedding is the celebration of a union. It’s about the bride, the groom and all the people who have supported and will continue to support their love.
Which is why you also agreed for Bokuto to handle the entertainment. He planned the playlist for the wedding march and the band to play at the reception.
You heard from Kuroo that one member of the band was a friend of a friend of Bokuto’s and was also a volleyball player during high school. Apparently, he was a teammate of Ushijima back in Shiratorizawa.
By the time the entourage started lining up, the guests have already gathered at the quaint garden you decided to get married at. Your heart was filled to the brim seeing all your closest friends and family there for you and Kuroo.
As expected, majority of the guests were volleyball players or had once played volleyball in high school or college.
The wedding march began and you waited at the back, your heart hammering from excitement and nervousness.
You didn’t want to trip in front of all your friends and family.
What happened next was not something you were warned. You knew something was up when you heard Kuroo and his best man talking about it in hushed tones and got suspicious.
The music earlier was a sweet piano solo but the moment Kuroo stepped foot on the red carpet, the tune changed into an upbeat song you definitely know, a song you heard in Guardians of the Galaxy.
You didn’t have a couple song but Guardians of the Galaxy was the movie you and Kuroo saw on your first real date.
You remember how your initial attempts at a date kept getting hindered by work until Kuroo had enough. He planned your first date down to a detail and cooked dinner himself.
Kuroo made such an effort to finally make it happen and it ended with the two of you cuddling in the pillow fort you both made, watching Guardians of the Galaxy.
Hail, what's the matter with your head, yeah
Hail, what's the matter with your mind and your sign
Hail, nothin' the matter with your head
To your shock and amusement, Kuroo started dancing down the aisle, Peter Quill style. He wasn’t the only one too. The entourage that followed him were also busting some moves and you were certain nothing was choreographed or planned.
Everyone was making up their own steps. It was pure chaos. You loved it!
Baby find it, come on and find it
Hail, with it, baby, 'cause you're fine
And you're mine, and you look so divine
You had to admire and love Kenma, Tsukki and Akaashi even more for this. They were clearly uncomfortable and having a difficult time but stilled tried their best to move to the groove. Thankfully, their partners were very good dancers and were the ones to lead them.
Your maid of honor definitely knew of this beforehand. She looked like she practiced some dance moves. Oh, the betrayal!
Come and get your love
Bokuto then started walking seriously and you wondered if the dancing was over. But then, he paused, unbuttoned his suit and revealed a red fanny pack. He made such a show of unzipping too.
You had been wondering where he put the flower petals. Now you know.
Come and get your love
He was swaying his hips, emphasizing his butt and sprinkling flower petals with so much sass, you couldn’t help but laugh at his antics. It did not help that his suit had flower patterns on it.
Come and get your love
When he reached the seat occupied by his teammates, Bokuto paused and tossed some flower petals at Atsumu’s face.
“Hey! My mouth was open!”
Come and get your love
As a response, Bokuto tossed some more petals on his face and continued to strut and sway his hips to the tune down the aisle.
The music mellowed by the time Bokuto reached his place beside Kuroo.
When it was your turn to walk the aisle, you couldn’t even stand straight. You were laughing too much.
Thankfully, your father was there to guide you. He had been laughing and nodding his head alongside you but when the music transitioned to the soft guitars of “I See The Light”, the tears in his eyes turned from humor to that of both sadness and happiness.
All those days watching from the windows
All those years outside looking in
All that time never even knowing
Just how blind I've been
This was the song playing when Kuroo proposed. It was very fitting because neither of you had believed in love. As cheesy as it was, you both made each other realize that soulmates did exist.
Now I'm here blinking in the starlight
Now I'm here suddenly I see
Standing here it's all so clear
I'm where I'm meant to be
You were getting closer and closer and you could see Kuroo’s nose getting very red. He was about to cry and frankly, so were you. Never in a million years did you think you’d be one of those girls getting so emotional on her wedding day. But here you are.
And at last I see the light
And it's like the fog has lifted
And at last I see the light
And it's like the sky is new
And it's warm and real and bright
Kuroo shook your father’s hand as they exchanged a meaningful look. He turned to you, sniffing and tearing up but smiling widely as he took your hand.
And the world has somehow shifted
All at once everything looks different…
He led you to the dais where the officiant was waiting, stopped and gave you a look you would never forget.
Now that I see you
AN2: I'm not very good at describing dresses and gowns so if you're curious to what I had in mind, it's this. As for the songs used, it's Come and Get Your Love by Redbone and I See The Light by Mandy Moore and Zachary Levi. I was also gonna add in Tendō making the wedding cake but he's a chocolatier, not a baker so that would be forcing it.
Edit: So... I didn't mean to post this. I thought I saved it in drafts but I was too tired I didn't realize I added it queue. I was gonna proofread it first before posting but here we are. I made a few changes, just things that seemed weird or didn't make sense. Like, the wtf is rined? What was I even trying to say there?
