Thoughts about a nursery. So we will probably not make a nursery right away. Both René and I want to co-sleep and we'll be getting a bedside crib for that. Other than that, baby will be getting something that furniture thing I can't remember the name of. It's a box with lots of drawers. Is that called a drawer? in our bedroom for clothes and diapers and all the other baby stuff. None of us thinks it's "natural" to let a baby sleep alone in her room and she'll be too small to enjoy a nursery for a long time anyway. But since we are Danes we won't have troubles with her sleeping alone in a stroller outside of a cafe/shop or just generally sleeping outside ... alone It will also save us a lot of money, which means we won't have to budget as tightly.

Today I Learn: about JBuilder

Today we got to play around with the google map api when making our BenchBnB project. This project is meant to give us a taste for what it will be like to do our capstone. We were to build up this app for Benches from scratch. It was a cool project, I seeded the database with some unique/cool benches in NYC.

Some features we had included showing the bench locations with a marker/pin. This gave us more practice using the Flux architecture.

I enjoyed this project and we will be continuing Day 2 on Monday.

On a related note, I am excited for the upcoming capstone project. This weekend, I'll be making a project proposal laying out my phases with some hand-drawn lo-fi wireframes.

Oh, and we have a React assessment coming up as well. I'll have to study for that some time this weekend.

App Academy, Week 7, Day 5

Today we started building a mock version of Air BnB using both react and Rails--finally, it feels like everything that we've been learning for the last seven weeks is all coming together!

The most important thing that I learned today was how to use jbuilder to construct Rails views that serve up JSON objects to an API that can be utilized by React to create its own frontend views. Within a React-Rails single page app, the actual views that a user sees and interacts with are all served up by React, which makes behind-the-scenes AJAX requests to the Rails server in order to update itself according to user input. And since React is written in JavaScript, it needs JavaScript objects back from the server rather than HTML. Thus, we use jbuilder to construct those objects and serve them back up to our React frontend.

Another fun thing we learned today was how to use the Google Maps API to put a map inside of our React view and place markers within it. Using Flux, I was also able to make it such that when users mouse over an <li> representing the name of a location, the Google Maps marker representing that location jumps up and down until the user's mouse exits the <li>. Furthermore, we also learned how to make Google Maps markers disappear when they are moved out of view by the user and reappear when they come back within the bounds of the map.

Overall, I felt like this project really helped solidify my grasp of Flux, React, the React router, and jbuilder.

The Culmination

Today we kicked off a project meant to test out everything we've learned. BenchBnB! Instructions have become more general as we are expected to be more autonomous. Today is general setup, Monday we finish up!

We worked on the creation of a clone of AirBnB which ties together everything we have learned so far, and provides more time working with apis.

Today we made a pokedex using react and the flux pattern! It was the best possible last day of pairing. Yay!

Class Ramblings

Time has flown. Before we embark on a final project voyage, we are tasked to recreate a full fledge Trello clone. Trello is a productivity app styled after boards and looks to be really useful for organizing many people together toward select goals. I sure could use one for my final project, most certainly.

I'm trying to recreate it from the bottom of my Full-Stack heart.  I needed some helped getting started admittingly, but I found myself going off the rails as soon as I started getting my views working. I like to think I'm oddly comfortable with Composite views, but fitting them into the application is another beast entirely. Fortunately i have another day to think about all the trello code i want...

HM W7D5 - 4Mi Run

Its been a few days since I last posted and that pretty much tells its own story!

Its been so busy for me the last week that i've struggled to keep up! :/

Lots going on! I was so tired yesterday that I fell asleep while waiting in a queue! I then got home and lost the entire day to sleep!

W7D3 was 40min Hill work! Nada! Never happened! Planned on redeeming myself the next day, but you have heard that story already!

Today wasn't going to defeat me however! ... 4mi Run scheduled.

I may have had a very decent amount of sleep yesterday, but I was still up at 3am! After a bit of fussing around with breakfast and a bit of study I was out the door at 5:30am. I returned at 11:30, soaking wet and freezing cold after driving around far flung areas of London working out what roads lead where!

1pm and I finally got around to it! Donned my gear and got out of the door. As a result of missing weds' session I wanted to push hard so I hit it up! Ran well and the results are as follows:

Distance: 4mi

Time: 35:03

Avg HR: Just checked my watch and the batt is dead! :/

Cals: As Above! :/

However, there is one thing I can tell you!

I checked my time at 3.1mi (5K) and I hit it at:

26:28! - 8:24 pace!

This is a 44s improvement on my PB! Official new PB!! :) Super happy about that! ... I took the last mile a lot slower but still averaged 8:45mi pace!  

Last 4mi Run was 40 mins on treadmill so pleased to knock 5 mins off that too! 

Its been a good day!

Now a day of no running - id say rest but its unlikely to be - before my 8 miler on Sunday!
