The Swan

In 1939 Erik and his sister Ruth are sent to Devonshire, England, during the Kindertransport refugee program to live with Kurt and Sharon Marko as foster children just before the start of World War II. Angry and wishing he could return home on the night of his seventeenth birthday, Erik meets a boy alone in the forest who is cursed to transform each day into a swan, only taking his true form by night.

Erik made love to him the night he’d finished composing, and Charles had lain gazing up at the ceiling after, warm and sated and brimming with love. “Tell me at least,” he’d said, “what it’s about.”

Erik had smiled, kissed him on the lips, then once more over his beating heart. “A boy who fell in love with a swan.”

Charles is a merman discontent with the boundaries of his shrinking world, wanting adventure in lands he’s only visited in his dreams. When the opportunity to at last have his wish granted arrives, he sets out in search of the only human he’s ever made contact with: Erik Lehnsherr, who after years hunting and being hunted, is trying to forget the past in the seclusion of a small fishing village.

Erik doesn’t mean to love again, not after the pain it’s already won him. But the appearance of an eerily familiar young man, swept in by the sea, makes him believe in second chances and wonder if, for the first time, he can’t finally have peace. He should have known: it’s much too late for fairy tales.

Dangers lurk in the heart of the village and in the secrets he and this man he’s come to love keep from one another, threatening to tear them apart…

I take great pleasure to draw the flexibility and shiny scales of Charles' fish tail. This scene is taken from Chapter 4. Erik is drowning and Charles rushes to grab him and .... .....(if you want to know: go read this very promising tale!).

There, Erik throws himself wholeheartedly into his new life, trying to forget, convincing himself he isn’t lonely. He doesn’t mean to love again, not after the pain it’s won him in the past. But the appearance of an eerily familiar young man, swept in by the sea, makes him believe in second chances and wonder if, for the first time in many years, he can’t finally have peace. He should have known: it’s much too late for fairy tales.
