David Tennant and the Complete Arkangel Shakespeare
Heya everyone!
I'm back with another rare or interesting glimpse from my personal archives—sometimes it's a scan, sometimes text, or audio or video… and it always involves our lovely David Tennant.
Cast yer peepers upon these! 👇
On Twitter in June 2019, photographer @sheilabphoto shared two archive shots of a young David Tennant — taken while she was the principal photographer for The Complete Arkangel Shakespeare, an epic BBC audio project first released on cassette (1999–2000) and later on CD in 2003.
The Complete Arkangel Shakespeare was a $3M, 5-year venture that recorded all 38 plays in full using the Complete Pelican Shakespeare text.
Including David, four hundred well-respected actors (many of them RSC-trained) recorded their roles at London’s Sound House, creating one of the most ambitious Shakespeare audio collections ever.
David lent his voice to seven plays — Henry VI, Macbeth, Richard III, Romeo and Juliet, The Comedy of Errors, and The Merchant of Venice.
The two photos Burnett released of David during the recording of The Complete Arkangel Shakespeare are all we’ve seen from her since then. But I gotta admit — I'm very curious about what other Tennant treasures her archive may hold!
Oh, and I intend to do a much deeper dive into this collection at some point in the future. It deserves it.
And after all, what's not to like about David Tennant and Shakespeare, right?
