In the spring of 2010, I was sixteen and a junior in high school. My reading mostly consisted of YA christian contemporary novels. Let’s just say that my reading lacked variety. Every once in awhile, my mom would recommend a book that was not in my normal genre and she is pretty good at knowing when I will like a book. Her best recommendation to date was The Hunger Games. I checked out the THG and CF from the library and read them with no prior knowledge as to what they would be about. I was blown away by them and just could not stop thinking about Katniss and her story. This is where the obsession started.
Unfortunately, I made the mistake of reading them six months before the release of Mockingjay. To date, this is still the most painful wait for a book to be released. My mom was also anxious to read it so she bought all three books on the day Mockingjay was released. Now I always enjoy getting the full experience from a series, therefore I reread THG and CF before starting Mo. Then I started Mo late on a Tuesday night. I struggled to put it down after reading just a bit, but I needed sleep for school. Wednesdays at my high school were half days so we got out at 12:30. I rushed home and went right back to reading and finished it by dinner time. The range of emotions I experienced in such a short window of time left me feeling numb inside. No book had ever left me this struck before and I walked in a daze for a few days. The story was so beautiful and had such a powerful message. This experience I had specifically with Mockingjay is what cemented it as my favorite in the series and I will always defend it.
I reread the series three more times before the first movie came out and it has become an annual tradition to read it before each of the movies. I get really sad when I think about this being my final time, but I will probably do an annual reread every November in remembrance. That is how it has shaped my life. I have never been so crazy about a book that I can read it seven times and still crave it. This series has given me something to look forward to every year despite having some pretty bad years. I love that I have fallen into such a wonderful fandom. Though I have only recently started this blog and don’t really talk to anyone, I already feel at home here. I’m so thankful to have a community to go to that will get excited about the little things. Thank you for loving my favorite series and I cannot wait to cry in November with you.
