My first thought was, so Jared found a way to give Walker's supporting and background actors work, in the prequel. One day you're an office drone in Ranger HQ, the next day you're a sharpshooter hired by Abby Walker to hunt down her husband’s killers. I’m kidding though I hope Jared will play Abby’s fridged husband.
Kidding aside, neo-Westerns have been steadily gaining popularity for the past 2 decades: from Firefly to Justified to The Walking Dead to The Mandolorian to Yellowstone. Walker is semi neo-Western-ish at best, so not surprising that CBS and CW are going to try to go full Western through their most successful show on CW. Strike while the iron is hot. I think it's a right move because it’s potentially a win-win.
There’s ungodly number of Texan history buffs so they should have no problem finding consultants when they script Walker: Independence. Of course the real ingredient for success is the chemistry between the actors. They did a good job casting Walker so they’ll do the same for the prequel.
I love that Larry Teng, the director for the Walker Independence pilot, is very responsive on Twitter. I thought I would share some of his tweets relating to the prequel:
