A hardy evergreen, Sophora 'Hilsop' (sun king, kowhai) produces these exotic looking yellow flowers for a long period through late winter and early spring. The pinnate leaves are composed of up to 40 pairs of small green leaflets. This shrub needs a moderately fertile soil in full sun.

The red berries of Cotoneaster horizontalis (wall cotoneaster, herringbone cotoneaster, rock spray, wall spray) stood out against this black barn wall. This spreading, deciduous shrub will also have attractive autumn colour as the small glossy dark green leaves turn orange and red. The berries and flowers are valuable for wildlife.

The small deciduous tree Prunus mume 'Beni-chidori' (Japanese apricot) blooms earlier than the majority of flowering cherries. It has scented blossom so plant by a path so the fragrance can be appreciated. Occasionally the flowers are followed by edible but bitter, yellow fruits. This tree will grow in any moist but well-drained, moderately fertile soil preferably in full sun.
