The paired needles of Pinus sylvestris 'Aurea' (golden Scots pine) are temperature sensitive, turning bright golden yellow in the winter months and returning to blue green in summer. This is a slow-growing, evergreen conifer that requires a moist but well-drained soil with a sunny position.

Leave the Seeds for the BIRDS this winter! Don’t cut back your plants, you will be amazed at all the birds that come to dine on them. With each passing year that I do this, I have even more birds come!

The vigorous herbaceous perennial Physalis alkekengi (Chinese lantern, alkegengi, bladder cherry, strawberry-and-tomato, winter cherry) is grown for the inflated, lantern-like deep orange calyces that develop after the small creamy-yellow flowers. Left on the plant the ‘lanterns’ eventually form a papery skeleton around the red berry. This plant will grow in any well-drained soil in sun or partial shade but it can become invasive though in my experience it can be hard to establish.

This group of Betula utilis subsp. jacquemontii 'Doorenbos' (himalayan birch, syn. ‘Snow Queen’) provided a point of winter interest. The striking wintery silhouettes were enhanced by the evergreen background and could be underplanted with Galanthus (snowdrop) cultivars for early spring interest.

Even towards the end of winter the pink fruit, which split to reveal red seeds, of Euonymus hamiltonianus 'Winter Glory' (spindle) provide a display. This deciduous shrub has a rounded habit with oval green leaves turning orangey pink in autumn.

The seedheads of Eupatorium cannabinum (hemp agrimony, andurion, hemlock parsley, hemp weed, holy rope, Indian ague root, water agrimony) catch the low winter sunshine and continue to provide display value in the Cruickshank Botanic Garden in Old Aberdeen on the campus of the University of Aberdeen. This vigorous upright perennial has dense domed clusters of tiny light pink flowers in late summer and early autumn.
