Dare I say I’ve developed a decent tan this summer reading by the pool.
equinox this time
dark and light
briefly find
a teetering balance
.
night falls abruptly
as if it were pushed
day is vague and weepy
.
birds frown
glance south
.
burrowers burrow
seek out dry grass
twigs and leaves
while they last
.
humans build fires
inside and out
shut windows
drink hot drinks
woolens are set free
.
faint scent of
smoke
damp earth
hovering clouds
.
all earth revolves
.
Turning the corner
In water-logged June we began to suspect that this would be the summer that never happened. But July was darn near perfect, as summer weather goes, and so far August, too, has been what we imagine when we think of a Michigan summer.
Now the cone flowers at our own house have slipped just a shade past their prime. The Queen Anne’s lace that fills our fields has reached its late-summer height.
Daylight comes a little later these days; darkness, a little earlier. We now fall asleep to the sounds of the male cricket’s love song, with its sense of urgency.
A new season approaches. Slowly, we hope.

Crazy Claws' Wisconsin Dells Diary: Distraction #12
If there's one thing that's sure to remind all of you that the summer season in Wisconsin Dells is winding down, it's the fact of the Wisconsin State Fair having its annual run in West Allis, near Milwaukee, itself long a major source of the Dells' summer business, especially of a working-class sort or lower (or so Tradition expects): Once things wind down at State Fair Park a week from Sunday after an 11-day run, things seem to start going downhill for the summer game in Wisconsin Dells, what with schools starting their terms not long afterwards (and even then, in a state of magnificent decrepitude made worse by conservative thought expecting ignorance to be virtuous, when it's not quite that way, bucko).
And somehow, the heat starts dying off somewhat even as the waterparks go on truncated hours to reflect the ever-shortening daylight and the fact of schools back in session, with a Major Break on the Labour Day weekend. Luckily, the Dells manages to hang on a few more weeks into autumn, even if the waterparks close after Labour Day and the Tommy Bartlett Show's performers head back south for the winter, even if Cypress Gardens is now LEGOLAND Florida and the Ducks still make their presence upon Artificial Lake Delton for the most part through the fall colour period.
*************
And speaking of the Fall Colour Period, Wo-Zha-Wa weekend--which will be seeing a Hanna-Barbera Character Convocation hosted by and large by yours truly--can be said to be the start thereof in the Dells, with some early traces of fall colour evident along the so-called "real" Dells, as along the Wisconsin River and experienced on the boat tours for the most part. Or, if you're lucky, we can kayak through the Upper Dells and experience such in a more close-up fashion, even beyond the Upper Jaws in the Witch's Gulch/Stand Rock general area.
And speaking of kayaking ... Chopper and his ever-faithful Yakky Doodle came by the other weekend, and it dawned on me that this ever-inseparable pair, notwithstanding Fibber Fox and Alfy Gator "on the prowl," and then some, might enjoy a different take on the Dells than would be likely with the classic tour-boat experience. Otherwise known as kayaking it through the Upper Dells as the tour boats were winding down their schedule for the day, twilight settles in, and an almost eerie sort of magic can be said to ensue upon the Dells (and thankfully, nothing of a sort as would require calling in Scooby-Doo or similar types). I admit it seemed a little awkward for Yakky to sit on Chopper's shoulder as he was handling the kayak oar to keep time with the water and the evening's light. Who says you need to take the boat tours to seriously experience the Dells, the Upper such especially, as twilight comes along? (Especially followed up back on shore with the legendary hot fudge sundaes from Original Wisconsin Dells Fudge, as much an experience worth trying as the waterslides and wavepools.)
I wouldn't quite know how a hot-fudge sundae can otherwise provide comfort for what may have seemed like a miserable day--or a wonderful day, on the other hand--but suffice it to say this cat has a sweet tooth that even Shaggy would be impressed with.
Racing Summer
Today is the last Monday of July. Yes, that’s right…the very last one.
A very big part of me is wondering how July flew by so very quickly and the sadness that there is more summer behind me than there is before me is encroaching on my soul.
Perhaps it is because I just finished reading The Long Winterfor the umpteenth time that I am feeling today very much as Pa did at the opening of the book –…
