One of the reasons that Khalila/Dario has always struck me as an un-balanced, likely to fail ship
(- one sec, quick interim, for people who haven't been with me from the beginning, yes I do see K/d as a ship with many many challenges and the main reason I don't write them like that is because even writing fictional break-up scenes is awful for me for some reason -)
Is because by the end of the series Khalila basically has her life goals already sorted out (not only gold band scholar but bloody Archivist in charge of saving her beloved Library), and Dario... Well, we basically have no idea WHAT he wants. What are his goals? His ambitions? His plans? His desires? The closest we get, other than his desire to marry Khalila, is in S&P when he mentions wanting to run away with Khalila on a farm somewhere and have children, but even he admits that that's just a fantasy and he wouldn't know how to make it work.
So, yeah. They're so young, they can both get entirely new goals like a billion more times. But rn Khalila knows what she wants, and she's got it along with huge responsibility and new ties, and Dario apparently has no idea at all so can't make reliable judgements about whether his goals will mesh with hers. It's just a wonky place to try to start a hopefully long term relationship.
There was definitely a point in s&p when I thought that khalila and Dario were about to grab khalilas dad and brother and just sign the marriage contract there and then 😂
Instead we got the ''Not your querida'' scene, which I think a lot of people really liked. Like, I love it from a writing perspective and it was undeniably a huge moment, but ugh from a characterisation moment it frustrated me immediately.
The very short reason for why is that I feel like neither of them changed the way they related to each other throughout the series (Dario's urge to overprotect, Khalila's urge to break any restraints). Like, the only way khalila gets him to back off is by pointing out she's now a world leader and to threaten to break up with him entirely, and Dario's response is just 'ah right, mustn't damage that reputation, I'll be more subtly overprotective now'' like... So we end the series with no closure on their relationship and in my personal interpretation no belief that they've learnt anything about compromising with each other such as is necessary for a solid relationship.
Rant about this War Couple coming when??? One day.
Whenever I think of Dario/Khalila I still think it's absolutely hilarious that Dario has to repeatedly point out the marriage proposal was serious and he actually wants to marry her because no one fucking believes him the first 100 times.
First of all, do you know that we can tag asks now??? And save them as drafts?? Thank you new staff, that makes asks a LOT easier.
YES, it is fucking hilarious, it is one of my favourite Dario things, thank you anon.
So, what are we actually referring to here?
Dario proposes at the end of Ash and Quill. (Jess overhears)
His first attempt to repeat the proposal is at the start of Smoke and Iron, when has just admitted to Khalila his part in sending Morgan and Wolfe back to Alexandria. So, it's fair enough that he feels the need to repeat it! There's a chance Khalila might think it was all part of the scheme, after all.
Next, Khalila actually brings it up again, at the end of Smoke and Iron, to say that she definitely accepts. As with every relationship decision with these two, this is prompted or at least encouraged by their imminent deadly peril. Typical wartime couple. (Glain overhears this time.)
Lastly, Dario brings it up again, in their incredibly emotional scene from Sword and Pen. Dario has just finished a task that he hated, that hurt him inside, and his response is to remind her again, desperately, of his hope for the future. Note that this is completely unnecessary from a logical POV, he's already asked again and she's already clearly agreed at the end of Smoke and Iron. But he needs to hear it again he needs to be CERTAIN that she knows he was serious every time.
MY BABIES ♥
But also yes my IDIOT babies, maybe if you both stopped making decisions when you're about to die, you might both trust those decisions more?????
