Mothers (Mütter) - Käthe Kollwitz (German 1867 -1945) 1919 Lithograph
In Mothers, women and children of various ages huddle together, their linked bodies forming a solid structure that fills the composition. Kollwitz drew herself in the center, eyes closed and arms wrapped protectively around her two sons: Hans, the elder, and Peter, who was killed in combat at eighteen. “I have drawn the mother who embraces her two children; I am with my own children, born from me, my Hans and my Peterchen.”

One of the pleasures of digital art is that after the bulk of the labor is done, tweaks are simple and quick. I wasn’t sure what colors I wanted to go with, so I just made multiple! Which one of these is your favorite? Also, there’s prints of these available on smokepitfairytales.com for $20 and all this month I’m donating 22% of my revenue from art, books, and music to @projectrefit so they can keep combating isolation in the veterans and first responder communities. Happy Thursday. D-DAY PREPARATIONS (and other works)... I love the quality of light in this interior by Barnett Freedman, and little details such as the open window and the colour spectrum chart stuck to the board. It’s on loan to the exhibition @pallanthousegallery from the @benurigallery and is one of a number of works Freedman produced when he was an Official War Artist. Others include works from @imperialwarmuseums and Tate. I shall miss all of these when the exhibition ends on Sunday. Until then we are opening the Gallery for an extra hour every day this week - extending out covid-19 hours until 5pm to enable more people through to see the show. It’s been the first opportunity to see many of his works together in 60 years, so don’t miss it! #barnettfreedman #warart #modernbritishart #history #secondworldwar #pallanthousegallery (at Pallant House Gallery) https://www.instagram.com/p/CGz_9hDFYSf/?igshid=1qzwz6jq1uk1l

The Void | Mixed Media on Canvas | 2016 | 26 x 36 cm This painting conveys the sense of loneliness felt by those who have lost their brothers/sisters in the war in Syria and how this sense of loss is deepened every time they see families that have survived together. Artwork is part of ATAXIA Exhibition, a solo show for the Syria artist @nourzantah at the @P21gallery. The exhibition of the artist’s paintings transcend barriers of language, race, age and nationality, provoked by images and representations of war and violence from Syria, where she lived all her life until 2012. The works explore the suffer, deaths, solitude, migration and war among other themes.
