For anyone who's unaware, a recent Twitter phenomenon is Horse Race Tests: https://x.com/snakesandrews
Guy puts little janky horses in a simulated race and everyone loves it lol. Including me.
I wanted to try my hand at drawing my own designs for the current roster. Sorry to White and Cyan fans.
More text below cut :)
Going Left to Right:
Blue (Bullet'n Board), winner of 3 races
Grey (Downtown Skybox), winner of 2 races
Red (Resolute Mind Afternoon), winner of 1 race
Orange (Jovial Merryment), winner of 4 races
Yellow, winner of 1 race
Brown (Door Knob), winner of 2 races
Pink, winner of 0 races
Pink and Red were only introduced recently, so we have to cut Pink some slack lol.
**Also these win calculations might be wrong I think the creator has an official thing up somewhere on their Twitter page**
Some horses have gotten names when they've won and others haven't. Poor Yellow lol.
I tried to loosely base their shapes and personalities on their sprites, but I definitely took some liberties obviously lol. They are all pretty horse-like. Not just funny blob horses lol
Notes:
Blue is like a depressed version of Patrick Bateman in my head. Minus the Reagan-Era bullshit lmao
Orange originally started styling his mane like that because he wanted it to be reminiscent of Blue, the winner of the very first Horse Race Test.
Yellow is genuinely just happy to be here dude lol.
Brown looks the most like a normal horse because I thought it'd be funny. He's like thank god I'm the only normal one here lol.
This is my friend's mean girl werewolf character, Steph! Their art of her is in the top left!!
I was invited to draw her werewolf form because I am a furry it's kind of my thing to draw wolves. Plus I just love werewolves so much, so yeah! This was sosososo much fun lol.
This was also the second stab I took at this because the first time I just got wrapped up in it and forgot Steph had an actual canon werewolf design. Got lost in how much fun I was having with that other one too lol!
So yeah I'll be posting that other one later today.
This is part of like.. my "official" nextgen, if you will. Not that I'm doing a whole lot with this "official" nextgen lol. Don't even know what a good name for it would be lol.

But yeah! Sunset and Tempest have two children together, but I had only come up with one at the time of drawing this. Their daughter's name is Solar Flare, partially named after her grandmother, Stellar Flare, who Sunset had been making amends with by the time Solar was born. They're trying to make peace.
There is. SO MUCH. to read below this cut, so you've been warned lmao.
I imagine Solar Flare would be quite gifted with magic, in large part thanks to Sunset's mentorship but also thanks to the raw magic power passed down to her from her mother Tempest. Solar is a bit of a powerhouse lol.
Other than that I have done very little brainstorming. But I hope you like these designs! :)
Edit: Including some info I'd come up with while discussing with a beloved mutual :))
Q: "This is such a wonderful pairing that would get so much out of being with one another, there's a level of guilt I think both of them will never quite be able to let go of but it will shrink the more love and acceptance they're shown. As the saying goes, shared joy is double joy but shared sorrow is sorrow halved <3
I saw you've said you've done very little brainstorming so I thought I'd ask some toughies hehe
How do you think their pasts would impact their parenting? Does Solar Flare ever have an ambitious streak of her own that worries her moms? How much would she know about her moms pasts?"
A: "OOGH THOSE ARE GREAT QUESTIONS!! Honestly I think the fact that she's such a powerhouse of a prodigy paired with who her parents are might make some people wary of her now that I think about it.
(This is so fucking long strap yourself in)
Honestly I feel like Sunset would definitely encourage her daughter to go crazy with what she's capable of doing, like she wants her to absolutely reach for the stars because she most definitely has the means to. Her mom was the former pupil of Celestia, after all, and Solar is likely seen as the next important name in the world of powerful unicorns once she reaches adolescence. Sunset may have applied a certain amount of… pressure on her daughter, but unlike with Solar's younger brother who cracked under that pressure (much like Sunburst), Solar THRIVED under it. She's a junkie for studying and tests and WINNING EVERYTHING lmao. The important part is that Solar had the raw talent to carry her past others who worked just as hard. Honestly she might not appreciate that fact enough, sort of believing that other people just need to get on the grind like her (including her brother).
Tempest is definitely more laid back when compared to Sunset. She's much more introverted and used to having strict limits placed on what she's allowed to do, so she's not always as much of a go-getter in the same sense, especially now that she's settled down. It's not at all that she Discourages ambition, she just doesn't place quite as much importance on success. She can help keep the family grounded at times and provide a nice balance to Sunset who can sometimes get swept up in the glory of her spectacular eldest child. The only thing is that Tempest is often very busy with work, which allows the family dynamic to swing a little far towards Sunset's (accidental) intensity (especially since Solar takes VERY well to Sunset's style and is kind of mean to her brother for not doing so).
With Aurum Dusk (the Sunpest boy, younger brother who I've been referring to), he became so afraid of failing, especially after not being as immediately talented as his sister, and disappointing his mothers, that he gave up on trying at all. This Devastates Sunset because she loves her boy and believes in him. It's just that the pep talks she tries to give him scare him. He usually takes better to the mellower approach from Tempest, but that's only when he's receptive at all, which isn't often in his somewhat-reclusive teenage years. Eventually things get better once he opens up to Sunburst, who helps explain things to the rest of his family since he can relate to Aurum's own struggles quite intimately."
Sunset is becoming her mother and hasn't realized it yet but when she does she's gonna be MORTIFIED lmao.
The style for these guys is a whole lot looser than my SunPest lineup because I may or may not have made the canvas like 7835 pixels by 4604 pixels. Whyy did I do that lol? That's also why Discord isn't here lmao ;w;
I had to like color all of them on their own copy of the canvas and then paste them all together on the final one lmaoo making things so much harder for myself for no reason fr
From left to right we have:
Princess Twilight Sparkle, matriarch (she/her)
Starfall Swirl, eldest child (she/they/he)
Eldritch Whispers, middle child (he/they/it)
And Cryptic Cipher, youngest child (they/them)
I don't have a ton to say about these guys for right now since I'm still deciding what I want their dynamics to be like and what the family dynamic ought to be like as a whole.
Generally my ideas for them are Incredibly Charming Wizard Dork (SS), Silly Prankster with Comprehension of Horrors Beyond the Mortal Realm (EW), and Reclusive Prodigy with a little bit of Elphaba influence (CC)
Here's a link to my TH folder that houses all of my NextGen characters for this universe (which has yet to be named): https://toyhou.se/werewargs/characters/folder:6487822
Also here are the kiddos' concept doodles! :
They received very minimal changes. Overall they feel a bit less saturated which is shame (can't wait for Tumblr to desaturate them even more). Wonder if I did that on purpose I literally don't even know I drew these almost four months ago lol.
Extra Notes While I'm Thinkin'
- Starfall Swirl probably attends magic school with Solar Flare and acts as her biggest rival, albeit unknowingly. Starfall isn't nearly as competitive as Solar and is a bit slow to understand social cues the unicorn may be sending her way. Solar: *glaring at Starfall menacingly for getting a better score on a magic exam* Starfall: "Wow I sure am glad I don't have an intense stare like that. People would think I was mad at them all the time!"
- Eldritch Whispers very likely spends a lot of time training his chaos magic with his dad. Discord helps him learn to use such powers expertly, a skill that is mandatory if Whispers wants to use his magic to help ponies. I imagine he dreams of sealing away various incomprehensible horrors that slip through interdimensional rifts that pop up here and there in Equestria. I'm sure those are nothing to worry about.
- Cryptic Cipher is entirely focused on arcane codes and ciphers. They are quite gifted at making ones of their own, but they also specialize in decoding the ancient magic they research. Their primary occupation is doing such work. They strive to help further Equestria's understanding of its history, back to the era of Grogar and Gusty the Great.
- Cipher's magic also works much more similarly to how unicorns' magic does, as opposed to Draconequi (?). They can't use magic to levitate and have to use their wings for flight, and their horn acts as their only spellcasting focus (they can't cast spells by snapping their fingers, etc.)
- Starfall and Whispers can use magic using their horns (unicorn style) AND ALSO cast spells just by thinking/willing them (draconequus style).
- Starfall prefers using her horns to cast magic, as she was mainly taught that way by her mother and by other magic teachers at her magic school (all of whom were ponies).
- Whispers, however, is a lot like his dad in the way that he often simply snaps his fingers to cast a spell. BUT the rings of his horn glow whenever he uses any kind of magic. It can be hard for him to sneakily cast spells lol.
