Finished the Speed Paint of the Warlayer test prints that I made! I went with two different methods, each suited to the style of primer I used. The Blue plates were done over a grey orimer, and I wainted on the weathering manually after getting blue and gunmetal on. The red plates were done over a dark brown primer where I started by sponge brushing it to look rusty, then applied the red platinf and silver highlights.

I like them both but the red method was a bit quicker. I need to try that process with another plate color (instead of just red).

The last few days I’ve been doing a quick terrain paint job for one of my friend’s kickstarters. He’s working on the fourth round of content for the Warlayer 3D printed terrain files. Really awesome modular setup, check it out!

I’ve been following WarLayer for a while and this morning their latest Kickstarter just went live. If you’re not familiar, these guys do .stl files for terrain that you print yourself and their new range of modular, Gothic-style architecture looks fantastic.

Last day of Stream Week

Since yesterday I wasn’t quite able to finish this test-batch of terrain, I’ve decided to get it the rest of the way done on my stream tonight!

That means the last of the weathering and highlighting is all that’s left! When they are fully built, I’ll do a clear coat test to see how a couple of different options I have match up! I can’t wait to see how it pans out.

Speed Paint Session 1

Really pleased with what I was able to do in about two and a half hours. These are the first few rough prints I made from the Warlayer terrain kickstarter, and they are starting to really come together! One more session will do the trick I think, which is not bad for two buildings each done in a different style.

The building above I wanted to start it off with a corroded scheme, then stipple-on whatever its intact plate color was supposed to be, and finish it off with some extra weathering and metallics. The below piece is the opposite, starting with pristine colors and metallics, then adding weathering and finishing it off with a bit of over-metallic (silver and brass over the weathering when its done). The caution stripes could use a bit of cleaning up as well, but once the weathering is in place it should all click.

A few quick test prints of some Warlayer terrain components!

I decided to crank out part of the basic sample building as a test, using pretty basic low-res settings, just to see how it would turn out. The walls slide really snug into the pillars, and the 2-length wall sections (shown here) are actually quite big! the hangar door is almost big enough for a rhino, and just barely big enough for a ridgerunner if you don’t count their base.

All-in-all I’m excited to keep printing and experimenting with the settings. I’m treating this first basic building as sort-of the prototype for future prints, and with each new structure I’m going to try new things to improve the print (resolution, print speed, adaptive layers, etc). Expect to see painted pictures soon!
