Bush received which is titled "Bin Laden Determined To Strike US" warning of hijacked planes attacking attacking the US. The 2 page memo states the FBI's words, which is no coincidence due to the fact they put FBI director Ashcroft on personal jets instead of commercial airliners- six months prior to 9/11. Knowing the attacks were imminent, you would think you'd boost military security in areas most likely to be attacked like NY or Washington. Instead confusing war games exercises kept US air defenses scattered and up in Alaska. A series of last minute changes occurred in the Pentagon on 9/11. The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Henry Shelton, was absent on 9/11 putting his deputy Gen. Richard B. Myers. The director of the FAA Ben Sliney- his first day was 9/11 and was required to speak to the Hijack Coordinator Lt. Gen. Mike Canavan who was in Puerto Rico without assigning a replacement. At the head of the National Command Center was B.G Montague Winfield but on 9/10 he instructed Capt. Charles Leidig to take his place on 9/11, whose first day it also was. Commander of Northeast Defense NEADS/NORAD Colonel Marr Called his superior Maj. Gen. Arnold to get authority to send jets to scramble the hijacking. Arnold was in a high level meeting where he could not be reached by phone. Gen. Ralph Eberhart was top command at NORAD AND DID NOT SUSPEND THE WAR GAMES despite knowing the attacks were real- to send all fighters to assist. Eberhart left for a 30 min drive to another Colorado base leaving high command without authority to act. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld was no where to be found. Instead of taking command Rumsfeld was found walking injured out of the Pentagon, while his country was under attack. He was missing for 30 minutes.
