A Warrior’s Return: Yuriokotehok
The empty stadium was beginning to fill with the first trickling of Skaters and staff – the solitude that Otabek had taken at the edge of the rink slowly but surely intruded upon by the loud hum of the Zambonis preparing the surface, the bustle of tables being set up and mics being tested.
It hadn’t stopped feeling strange – even 5 years later – not strapping on a pair of skates and warming up to go out there, himself.
Now? He was preparing to watch from the sidelines for the first time as a certified EMT. Maybe he wouldn’t be out there tonight wowing the audience (as if he ever could have), but he found some small respite in knowing that if anything went wrong, he was there to help. He spied familiar faces filter out onto the freshly smoothed rink – he’d followed them despite quitting the Competitive Skating circuit at the age of 13 shortly after a skate camp in Saint Petersburg had proven to him he wasn’t cut out for it.
Warm-ups and practices were his favorite to watch. It was there you could see who a Skater really was. Today he found his eyes following one he’d long had admiration for – a young man he’d met at that fateful summer camp 5 years ago. He’d had the bearing of someone who’d fought for every step forward and won – but ultimately Otabek couldn’t climb the mountain in front of him. When he failed to place in the Juniors and couldn’t get past the Nationals, Otabek Altin had hung up his skates and found another path to follow. A noble one, he thought. A warrior’s path still, if different from the one he’d been unable to follow before. And there, gliding across the ice as if he’d been born to do it was Yuri Plisetsky.
Plisetsky had grown strong over the last few years. A fighter that had surpassed every test thrown at him, and someone Otabek continued to admire. They’d be announcing him as an Olympic candidate someday. Otabek was certain of that.
Otabek was watching all the skaters from his designated spot at the side of the ring, arms folded across his chest in his bright red medic jacket. But that one skater in particular kept his attention. Yuri moved with the grace and confidence of a multiple-gold winning athlete, and he should, but Otabek thought he noted a bit of weakness in the way he was skating - and only because he might have been a bit of a Yuri P. fan. He certainly wasn't telling anyone what his Yuri's Angel's Forum handle was, anytime soon. He might have been imagining it, too, but something just seemed a little off today.
