a much overdue gaming log that i meant to wrap up before the end of 2025 but my double hand injury and subsequent bone infection got in the way! some unfinished games particularly close to the end bc not all were good for the way my hand is going still. rip.
felvidek (dev. jozef pavelka, vlado granaj; 2024). honestly one of my highlights of 2025, especially since it was the year when i also first played pentiment and the kingdom come duology. i love you holy roman empire games, except this one takes place in slovakia during the hussite wars (so chronologically between pentiment and kcd). while the gameplay isn't particularly innovative (pretty regular for an rpg maker game), the game is very well written with an off-kilter sense of humor which feels suitable for the adventures of pavol, alcoholic knight who gets sent to explore the mystery of a burning castle against the backdrop of qawah loving cultists and hussites sowing chaos across the land. also, a very earnest and heartfelt story.
tiny bookshop (dev. neoludic games, 2025). surprise hit for me! as it says on the lid, you have a tiny bookshop and you sell books in a small town. you need to figure out which genres of books sell better in each place and take care to give appropriate recommendations (based on real books, which means you may come out of playing this with additions to your to-read list) to the townsfolk. you fulfill special tasks for the characters and each place inside the town. very charmingly written and i loved all the wlw rep. loved recommending carmilla to everyone.
elsinore (dev. golden glitch, 2019). as a lover of time loop games, elsinore really caught my eye. play as ophelia and contend with the issues of elsinore castle and around it. i really enjoyed the writing and the reactivity in this game to how you manipulate events is nothing short of incredible. and i say this as someone who does deal a lot with high-reactivity rpgs. this is especially noteworthy when you consider the size of the studio and that this is their debut game. honestly, i have yet to read hamlet, which the game is mostly based on, but it was lovely nonetheless. i really recommend this for people who like mysteries, choices, and time loops.
wartales (dev. shiro games, 2023). oh, i loved my time with this game and i really want to get back to it once my left hand plays nicer with hold to walk games. it's a hub-based open world game. it's a turn-based strategic rpg. it's a blorbo story generator. it's your plucky band of aspiring adventurers or taverners or former bandits making a living as mercenaries and dealing with the issues plaguing the land. from political intrigue involving vineyards to a refugee crisis, the local issues are interesting. the combat is also really interesting with the unit building being really cool, and the exploration with resource gathering and cooking and contracts is really cool. i played with the tavern dlc which added a lot of cool content. my band consisted of samuel kcd + his friends moishe and jacob and an oc + other kcd peeps and it was a lot of fun to open the king solomon. theresa and bianca are married. 10/10
overland (dev. finji, 2019). actually a replay, but this time on pc (or rather, the steam deck). sort of road trip game meets strategy rpg meets roguelike meets post alien invasion apocalypse. the graphics are charming, and the atmosphere is great. it's not particularly difficult until you make a shit decision that spells disaster for the current run. but there's always a next one where you can try to get to the western coast of the usa. you can play as an all-dog squad. incredible
skald: against the black priory (dev. high north studios as, 2024). a love-letter to the old school rpgs like ultima and such, this time with lovecraftian horrors. sadly didn't get to play much before i realized that it wouldn't be kind to my mangled hands. doesn't break new ground but what it does is very, very well-executed. the soundtrack is absolutely superb. especially if you got it for free during this holiday season's epic giveaways, i say give it a go.

That combat system is goated tho.
Giant mysterious hand what rabbit hole will you take me to next.
The plague rats in Wartales are so gross. You do several missions going into their warrens and fighting them and it's... ew, just ew. And then. THEN. Then I discover a lone plague rat in a ruin and... Look. I... I just couldn't leave him there? I mean, my band of misfits certainly thought I should have but that's just not the kind of warband I want to lead, ok?
