Washing Day
Artist: Augustus John OM (Welsh, 1878–1961)
Date: c. 1915
Medium: Oil paint on wood
Collection: Tate Britain, London, United Kingdom
Description
In 1910, John began to produce small oil sketches. These brightly coloured depictions of figures and landscapes were painted directly onto wooden panels. They were intended as studies for larger paintings but were commercially very successful. Here, John uses this same approach for a domestic subject. The model is Dorelia McNeill, John’s partner, who features in many of his works. She was known for her distinctive style which was influenced by Romani culture. McNeill is shown here wearing brightly coloured clothes she designed and made herself.
Vincent Maonde (Zambian) - Washing Day (oil on canvas, 2013)
Crafty catch up time. I wrote myself a big crafty room tidy up to do list and have been working my way through it ever so slowly. I have organised my works in progress into baskets or boxes. Everything I need for the project goes in the box. It seems to be working well so far. I am working on a wee mug rug for my work cup. It gets so hot when it is full of tea I struggle to get back to my desk without a juggle to save fingers. I was thinking of hand quilting it with the perle cotton but may have changed my mind. I will leave it in the box a while longer before I make a final decision on that. I finished up a mini quilt I have had floating around the sewing room for years. I put it in the box so it became a project and somehow little by little it got done. Now I just have to shuffle my mini quilts to fit it on the wall. The big blue star hexie quilt has been on the back burner while I was working on Mum's birthday quilt. Mum loved the quilt by the way, she hates having her photo taken so I don't have any pictures of her with it unfortunately. This morning I put the side units of the bbshq on the floor and checked progress, it is coming along nicely. The next task on my to do list is to pull out all of my UFO's and try and get one finished but for now there is a howling Nor-wester building up steam outside so I need to go hang some washing on the line.
Washing day again
Hot tip; if you have auditory sensitivities and it's washing day, fully recommend investing in some noise dampening over-ear headphones (or in ear if you have a preference), and a couple of good audiobooks.
Sometimes the noise can leak through and clash with the book, so I have to turn it off, but the noise cancelling will still reduce the overwhelm from the washing machine.
The audiobook can help distract your mind from the irregular or loud sounds.
Also recommend white noise/ambient soundtracks if that works better.

✨Drawing and Trivia✨
Happy July everyone! To celebrate this month I wanted to share my July Illustration of this year’s calendar, for anyone who did not get a calendar on time and for those who want to have some fun trivia!
The Carpet in this Illustration is inspired by one I have in my very own home, it is my very first proper big carpet I own. The Bra on the head of one of the duckies is inspired by the very first „prettier“ Bra I got when i was younger.I remember how a friend helped me get it because I was too shy to buy one on my own 🥹♥️
