The Anniversary of the Washington March
Tomorrow is the anniversary of the "I Had A Dream" speech by the honorable Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Wow. I can't believe it's been 50 years since the speech. A ton of civil rights events will be going on. Dr. King was an absolutely FANTASTIC person to do what he did. Because of him, there are no more signs that say "Colored" or "White". Because of him, black and white people can interact with each other however they want, they can go to the same places, he's made SUCH A DIFFERENCE in the world we live in today. Who knew that something that happened so long ago, could change the world we are in today!
Congressman John Lewis was in an article about the Anniversary. Here's the link: http://hereandnow.wbur.org/2013/08/20/john-lewis-march
Mr. Lewis was at the speech. He was the chairman of of the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee, one of the most crucial and important organizations contributing to the Civil Rights Movement. He was the youngest speaker at the march.
Here are his words: “We are tired of being beaten by policemen,” Lewis said in his 1963 speech. “We are tired of seeing our people locked up in jails over and over again. And then you holler, ‘Be patient.’ How long can we be patient?”
Mr. Lewis is now worried that my generation, the new generation, are not interested in the struggle for the Civil Rights.
"I’m deeply concerned that the present generation failed to grasp what happened,” Lewis said. “That’s why I think it is so important for young people — and people not so young — to know there’s a role for them to play. I have a feeling that people are just too quiet. And the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington is a good opportunity for them to move their feet.”
Tomorrow, I'm going to tune in to commemorate the historical event's 50th anniversary.
