Me: The air conditioning in my apartment doesn't turn off, even when the heat is turned on. I can turn it up or down, but when it is switched "off," it continues blowing a stream of cold air. I don't really mind the temperature (I can still make it warmer by turning the heat up), but it's a waste of energy to have it running continuously when it is already plenty cold, and it's raking up my electricity bill to have the AC and heat running simultaneously.
Apartment Maintenance: Well, you have heat, and you have AC, and we aren't paying for your electricity, so there's no problem!
Me: Yes, there's a problem, the AC temperature controls are broken.
Apartment Maintenance: Well, we'll fix it at some point, but it's low priority since it's only costing YOU money.
Me: It's been 3 f#@$ing months! When are you going to get the AC in my apartment to turn the f*^# off?!?
Apartment Maintenance: Okay, we installed a new thermostat dial in your apartment!
Me: Oh, you mean the thermostat that controls the heat but NOT the AC? That doesn't help. I still can't turn the AC off, and it's still wasting energy.
Apartment Maintenance: Ooh, here's an idea: we can put a plastic cover on top of your AC unit. That way you won't be able to reach the dials to control it at all. Problem solved!
Me: No, don't do that. Just make it stop wasting energy.
Apartment Maintenance: Okay, will look at it today.
Me: Good, I'm going to go grade an exam.
Apartment Maintenance: Good news! We installed a cover over your AC unit so it can't be used at all but will continue to burn energy!
