ALBUMS FOR FEBRUARY, no. 8. Herbie Hancock, Greatest Hits. I felt like #sundaynightjazz #vinyljazznight on like Wednesday a couple weeks ago and chose this. It was part of a collection @tiberiuskohn bequeathed me and it’s just great. Good shape for a Goodwill find (that was where most of the collection came from). And “Watermelon Man” is practically a pop song, fun and catchy. The rest are all along the lines of “jazz I almost understand what they’re doing,” where it’s a steady rhythm and a theme and then soloists working around that theme. I think either “Succotash” or “Olillqui Valley” (I think it’s the latter) had maybe my favorite string bass solo I ever heard—I paid attention to it the whole time, and it never stopped being interesting, which is not what you can say about a lot of bass solos. Also: isn’t that great type on the back cover? #herbiehancock #watermelonman #oliloquivalley #herbiehancockmaidenvoyage #albumcoverart #albumcovertypography (at Noblesville, Indiana) https://www.instagram.com/p/CL0tOxjLpp0/?igshid=135jp1x30p0er
A classic crossover jazz album, fusing funk, soul and electric synths with improvisational jazz. Head Hunters was the first jazz album to sell over a million copies. It’s not too hyperbolic to suggest that it changed the face of jazz. That, on its release in 1973, it lit the path for a new direction in jazz. Hancock had already been experimenting with his previous few albums (Crossings in particular) but Head Hunters brought avant-jazz funk to the masses. I don’t know if that was his intention, but it was just too damn funky not to. Containing only four tracks, and only three new – Watermelon Man he’d released to great acclaim and good sales a decade previously, here transfigured into something wonderfully new and exotic. The album opens with Chameleon, which sports a fantastically fat (or phat) funky bassline plunked out on Hancock’s ARP Odyssey Synthesizer. Watermelon Man is reworked making the most of Bill Summers’ percussion skills. The sleeve notes include not just Hancock’s four different synths, but 11 intriguing percussion instruments played by Summers, half of which I’ve never heard of. On the second side there’s a funky tribute to Sly Stone of Family Stone fame with the cunningly titled Sly and lastly Vein Melter, whose title sounds like it comes from a Kraftwerk album, but is actually a super-chilled but beautiful demonstration of a band who have really got their shit together. Harvey Mason on the drums is perfection itself, Bennie Maupin’s saxophone is sublime, and Hancock dips in and out with his synth sounds, keeping it all together. #herbiehancock @herbiehancock #headhunters #watermelonman #jazzfusion #jazzfunk #afrofunk #jazzimprovisation #electronicjazz #synths #jazzpiano #nowlistening #nowplaying #recordcollection #randomrecordreview https://www.instagram.com/p/CKn5vbBsebP/?igshid=15mgxta1jojdz
JAZZ SAYS IT’S READY WHENEVER I AM, no.3. Herbie Hancock, Head Hunters. We used to play “Chameleon” in high school jazz band. But we didn’t have synthesizers. Herbie does. This fits right in with my Kraftwerk spin a few nights earlier as far as synths go, but the resemblance of course ends there and then it fits with all the Parliament and Stevie Wonder (there’s a clavinet) and Sly Stone (one of the songs is named “Sly”) spinning I’ve done the last few months, being as this is basically a funk album filed under jazz. Also seems like it’s designed to be a *clears throat* “make out album” maybe? All that groove and then most of the second side is quiet and whooshy and (whispers) sexy. Working against that idea is the re-imagining of “Watermelon Man” which starts with an unexpected whistling (turns out it’s a beer bottle). #herbiehancock #herbie #headhunters #chameleon #watermelonman #jazzfusion #jazz (at Noblesville, Indiana) https://www.instagram.com/p/CDDQCgTAQWU/?igshid=1h4mpczffladc
