please note that my latin spelling is shaky + this isn’t the neatest post AND sung latin is hard to decipher if, like me, you’re not the most familiar with it because of a nice little thing called ELISION where vowels and syllables disappear from the phrase for. reasons i can’t yet understand. 

there are probably mistakes in here.

domina - usually used to mean mistress (like master/ owner) but likely a reference  to the use of dominus in a lot of church stuff to mean god. since god is a father/ creator, it’s fair to assume this is referring to a mother/ creator.

mater - also mother

salva me - save me

liber me - free me

the lyrics are, more or less, a lament of the loneliness of Scaramouche’s life, the companionship he has searched for in vain only to be thrown down into that loneliness. 

he is referred to as both grieving and wretched. he rejoices in that wretchedness. or he is both rejoicing and wretched. unsure?

words of joy and wretchedness?

he begs his mother/ a non-specific “you” (referring to Ei as either domina, mater or mama) to save him and free him although he lives and rejoices so in his loneliness and wretchedness.

salva/ liber me are imperatives, but in this case they’re more of a request than a demand.

the salva, salva me mama part BREAKS me.

the use of domina, mater nostra and phrases like salva/ liber me is drawing on language common in prayers or hymns. he is not only calling out for his mother, he is calling on his god.

the prayer is futile.

ik the whole “it’s not talent it’s hard work” thing is overdone in art but. 

2019 vs yesterday (14/01/23). the (hopefully visible) difference/ improvement is the result of essentially non-stop practise - i have a pile of filled sketchbooks over a foot high - and i still have a lot of room to grow & improve. 

to 13 year old me (in 2019), the skill and knowledge i take for granted now seemed an unattainable goal. 

when you start something new (like drawing) don’t feel put off if your first attempts look bad. especially if you’re starting it later than most people do. practically everyone started out being “bad”, because you have to start somewhere. the start is the hard part and eventually the learning curve steepens and shit gets easier faster.

people often focus on what’s left to learn or achieve, while underestimating what they’ve already done. yes, i still draw wonky eyes and avoid hands (and especially feet. i hate drawing feet and shoes) and frequently work myself up into a state over how everything i draw is “awful”, but there are so many things i can do now that i couldn’t before. (eg. hands, sometimes. honestly literally everything because, prior to beginning this crazy quest in 2019, i practically never drew.) 

in short, instead of being demotivated by how far you have left to go, look back and think about how far you’ve come.
