I’ve heard people try to say Wayne Terrisborn isn’t chronically ill because technically he’s doing it to himself and can stop at any time. Personally, I don’t care the reason, if you regularly spend a great deal of time sick in bed or just walking around miserable you’re chronically ill, whether your body just does that or you’re saving up health so you can survive being literally torn in half by a rusting cannonball.

Technically he could stop and possibly get out of such a dangerous lifestyle. But that would require leaving Waxillium and there’s no avoiding getting shot/kidnapped/exploded around that man. Besides, what would be the fun in giving it up? Sounds boring. Sometimes a man needs a few gunshot wounds.

getting wholesome Wax and Wayne moments out of my system, Terris edition

"Wax?" Wayne has been contemplative on their ride home today. Contrary to popular opinion, that isn't that much of a rarity. Wayne thinks a lot, and a lot of it doesn't make much sense to Wax, but there is some kind of strange philosopher in the kid.

"Yeah?" Wax gently tugs on Destroyer's reins, leaning back in the saddle so she slows down to fall in line fully beside Smoker, Wayne's dapple gelding, who always likes to take his time on a calm ride like this one, but has a surprisingly fast gallop when the situation calls for it.

Atop his back, Wayne sits with natural ease, barely paying attention to where he's going and simply trusting the horse. He's also fiddling with his sleeve, or rather... the metalmind underneath his sleeve? He didn't get hurt today though, and he doesn't look like he's storing health.

"... your Terris sounds real fluent," is what he finally says, glancing at Wax from under the brim of his hat.

"It is," Wax responds, relaxing more, but also curious, "We had to speak only Terris in the Village, pretty much. So it got more natural over the time I was living there."

Wayne hums. Wax has told him about that time of his life before, though Wayne didn't ask much more about it then. He seems to have something on his mind now.

"I only know a couple phrases," Wayne says, turning to look at the road, "And I reckon my pronunciation's real bad. Been a decade and then some since I was learnin'."

Since his father died. Wax thinks he understands. Wayne's father taught him the bare basics of feruchemy, but language... that's more difficult to maintain on your own. There aren't a lot of Terris out here in the Roughs. Wax hadn't expected to meet any, either.

In fact, it's only been Wayne, until those witnesses earlier that Wax helped calm down and explain to him what they saw in a language they felt more comfortable in. Wayne must have been paying more attention than he was letting on.

"If you tell me the ones you know, I could probably help you make them sound right," Wax offers. How could he not? "And teach you some more. If you're up for it." Heritage might be a different thing for Wayne than for him. Wayne lost a father who should have been there to share these things with him. He never had a Terris community. Not that he would have fit in at all. But he should have gotten to grow up with this. Wax will be a poor replacement, but he'll see what he can do.

The grin Wayne gives him, warm and excited, is already reward enough. "Aw, I ain't never had a private tutor! I promise I'll be on my best behavior, Mr. Dawnshot, teacher, sir."

"Don't do that." Wax rolls his eyes. Then repeats the phrase in Terris for good measure.

Wayne tilts his head as he mouths the words. "Huh. Sounds familiar. Like I've heard someone yell it at me before."

"I wouldn't be surprised."

"And what's that s'pposed to mean?!"

Wax grins.

Wayne grins back.
