sanji during whole cake island (original post + art that inspired this)
Cheese!
One arc was all we needed to witness this trope… one arc. Going on hunger strike was a ballistic move by Monkey D Luffy.
if zoro was in wci💔
my favorite part of about the wci arc is that it is So Much About Family. Sanji's bio family, yes, but also his chosen family! his nakama and zeff and the crew of the baratie! and bege and chiffon and their crew and AUGH I LOVE FAMBILY.
And that's not even getting into the charlotte siblings and their relationships (i really love katakuri and brulee's dynamic augh) (katakuri and all of the charlottes have such a DYNAMIC and i love it)
but like, yeahj, i fucking love fambily in media <3
so i thought about how Luffy frees all of the Vinsmoke siblings in my Straw Hat Ichiji AU, once Ichiji actually opens ip about how all of them are Judge's prisoners, not just him or Sanji. and since I made Judge extra terrible here; they are not even regarded as humans with their own mindsets and they're just glorified slaves.
the freedom doesn't really hit Niji or Yonji at first
Reiju wants to cry, but she is suppressing her feelings out of habit
Yonji is the first one to crack, when he toasts with Luffy (who insisted on a small feast as they're heading towards Wano) and says "no more Germa!"
he goes still for a couple of seconds, like he's waiting for the hammer to fall. then he finally realizes that there are no furious, angry king who yells at him or punishes him. there are no cold, grey walls anywhere. he can eat whatever he want, say whatever he wants and do whatever he wants.
then he breaks down crying.
Niji responds "why the hell are you crying", not realizing that he's crying too. the tears won't stop. he's getting frantic to stop crying, but he slowly realizes that...there is no one to punish him if he cries.
Reiju finally lets tears stream down her pretty face, because she's free to cry again. she's free to show her emotions again.
everyone gets really concerned about why they are suddenly crying. well, Ichiji and Sanji aren't because they are trying their hardest to not join. Chopper asks Yonji why he's crying, if he's hurting somewhere and he needs to tell him, as the ship doctor
Yonji just says "because's we are free!", laughing through tears
Luffy, who normally hates whenever someone is crying, doesn't stop them and lets them be. he doesn't have the full picture of what Judge did to them, but he knows enough to know that they need to cry.
he firmly believes that everyone deserves to be free, that includes showing emotions too. also he kinda regrets that he didn't punched or kicked Judge's ass, for making Sanji (and the others) cry.
anyways, i just thought that in any scenario where the Vinsmoke sibs would be free from Germa, they would break down because the damage Judge did is too big to hold in. he experimented on them, forbade them from seeing their mother, forced them to train all the time, tried to remove their emotions, sent them to wars and even pitted them against each other, if one showed "weakness". he didn't even let them see their mother when she was dying.
in my opinion, Luffy absolutely should've kicked Judge's ass, like he did with Arlong, Crocodile or at Enies Lobby.
“Sanji’s character development in Whole Cake Island was undone in Wano because he’s still a perv!”
Sanji’s development in WCI was not about learning to stop being a perv, where did you get the idea it was? It was about healing from his childhood trauma, accepting his self-worth, and learning to rely on others and not do everything by himself. Wano continues this through Sanji experimenting with but rejecting the raid suit, reaffirming he will not become his brothers modifications or no and showing his new willingness to accept help from others with how he asks Zoro to kill him if he loses his humanity and calls on Robin to save him from Black Maria. Sanji’s development from Whole Cake Island was never undone but rather strengthened, but you’re insisting it was based on something that didn’t exist to begin with.
I’m looking for fics about Sanji coming back to the crew after whole cake island and someone either him or someone else telling them about his traumatic childhood and their reactions to it- anyone have any good recs? Bonus points for Sanji Zoro or Sanji Luffy pairing
