i find it both beautiful and poetic that Luffy is the one who frees Ichiji's heart in the end. especially for the acechiji! au because Luffy finishes what Ace started (and failed to do). he literally liberates Ichiji from a curse life as Judge's prisoner and chess piece

during WCI, he can see Ichiji's mask crack, his demeanor break and hear his heart crying, begging for anyone to see his true self; a child who's chained to this horrible place without any hope to escape.

Sanji was able to escape because Judge let him in the first place and he would never let Ichiji escape.

Ace may have started the mission to free Ichiji from Germa, but Luffy finished it and gave him a new home on the Sunny.

and Ichiji never forgets that.

(and don't worry, Luffy made sure to leave the path open for the other two + Reiju to escape)

so, imagine that Ichiji is onboard the Sunny post-WCI escape and they're sailing towards Wano

for the first time in his time, Ichiji realizes he is truly free. just what Ace always promised him. he's free to weak his heart on his sleeve, to show and tell exactly what he thinks and feels. Luffy places his hat on his head and says that since he was married to Ace, it makes him his family now and from now on, he's his nakama.

and Ichiji answers "then I will proudly follow you, my captain"

maybe Ichiji shed some tears when he tastes Sanji's food for the first time, to really eat something so delicious and it's made by his brother's hands.

he'll let Nami comb his hair, so it's less spiky and more flowy.

he'll let Chopper patch him up and finds it very therapeutic to hug the fluffy little reindeer.

and he'll sit on the Sunny's railing, listening to Brook's music and feels the sea breeze against his face, to feel the sun shine warmly on him again

for Ichiji, it feels like Ace is smiling at him from the heavens, along with his mother.

because he's finally free, just like he should be.

anyways, we have already established that Ace met Ichiji at a certain bar at Mirror Ball Island, Funky bar. that was their first meeting.

since then, the pretty redhaired prince has lived rentfree in Ace's head and he decides to save him from the caged life at Germa

well, he and the Spade pirates decides to infiltrate a masquerade ball that Germa is hosting for WG-affiliated kingdoms and bear in mind, there's TONS of marines there too. including admirals and so on.

Ace doesn't care and he still infiltrates the place, since it was their only chance and Germa is rarely ever "open". either he does it or he can wave goodbye to the pretty redhaired prince.

as you can probably guess, Ace makes it inside the castle under disguise (he beat down a high-level marine and stole their masquerade outfit) and yes, it's absolutely a masquerade ball. the fancy sort and everyone has masks, so no one actually can see if he's a pirate or not.

and there, in the middle of everything, Ace instantly recognizes his prince of dreams; Ichiji with his red hair and wearing a fancy prince outfit in white and dark red with golden accents and a matching mask.

Ichiji is smart and it doesn't take him long to figure out who Ace is, how he found him and managed to infiltrate the place right under Judge's big nose.

"You must have a death wish, Portgas." Ichiji then whispers to them as they dance. "The audacity of a pirate to infiltrate a masquerade ball Germa is hosting, with the entire place full by high-level marines and the cruel king himself."

"If it's to see the beautiful prince who's kept in this golden cage...then it's all worth it." Ace muttered back to him, still in a bliss for dancing with the prince of his dreams. "Come away with me, Cherry. Come to the sea, I know you want to see it."

Ichiji hesitates, because he knows that if he tries to run away, Judge will find him and he will be furious. But he also don't want to stay forever at Germa, he still dreams of being free and he wants to see the Grand Line.

"He won't let me." Ichiji tells Ace. "I'm his masterpiece and unlike my brothers...I am not expendable, so he will always keep me here. He owns me."

but Ace just scoffs. "And who is he to decide over your life? You are your own person, aren't you? You can't own a person, that's just psychotic." then Ace leans closer to whisper to him. "Forget them, Ichiji. Forget them all. Come with me and you will never be caged again, you'll be free as a bird. Go wherever you want, you'll swim in the blue ocean and you will smile in the sunshine. Come away with me."

"You are prepared to kidnap Germa's crown prince?" Ichiji only smirks at him.

"Is it really kidnapping if he consents to it?" Ace grinned and twirls him around.

as you can probably guess, Ace successfully manages to take Ichiji away from Germa that night, they took full advantage of having different masked disguises and the Spade Pirates escaped into the night with a prince onboard

Reiju might know what happened, but she can't tell anyone what she saw or not saw. after all, she never saw her brother after he danced with a tall, dark-haired man dressed as a Goblin King.

yes, i am a big fan of cherry-mash's Labyrinth au. also helps that it's a favorite movie for me and my husband

don't worry about the rest of the siblings, they will manage to escape during WCI and never look back ever again.

yes, i also agree that Yonji joins the revolutionaries.

and yes, the Spades threw heck of a party onboard their ship, celebrating that they tricked Germa's king and a shitload of high-level marines and WG officials. Ace and Ichiji is their power couple now.

+bonus: the Spades retold this story to Whitebeard pirates, once they joined, and it's now their favorite story, because Ace had the AUDACITY to stroll into a marine-infested masquerade ball and whisk away the crown prince of Germa, right under the north blue's cruel king's big, ugly nose. 🤣

(ngl Whitebeard loves that story, never laughed so much at that)

+bonus 2.0: Ichiji retells the story for the Straw Hats post-Wano. Luffy laughs the loudest at Ace's antics. Sanji is astonished that it worked. then he gets mad and kicks Zoro for not doing that at WCI.

straw hat! ichiji has been gone for a while, so here's a lil art dump of his post-timeskip outfits

yes, he's here to serve looks and to kick ass! he's hot and he knows it

so following my silly fanfic ideas about Merry (aka Kinger's dying human child, who was Caine's original owner)

i decided to make Pomni deal with Caine's poorly managed grief, which leads to him projecting unhealthily at Pomni, because he's at his breakdown

so instead of letting Pomni getting devoured by feral Gummigoo and his friends, Caine puts Pomni in a secret room. partly because he have no idea what to do with her, but mostly because he's trying to replace his OG owner with Pomni

Caine, in the middle of his breakdown, decides that Merry's death is what changed everything, so it all became wrong. in his twisted AI mind, he thinks that he needs to make it right again by getting his "human" back. and since Pomni reminds him so much of Merry, he decided it has to be her.

Pomni, on the other hand, is confused because she's now stuck in a pink ballerina princess-themed room. she fully expected of being tortured when Caine said he was gonna "put them in their places". instead, she's being kept in a golden cage as if she was something precious.

Caine appears not long after and he decides that Pomni "still doesn't look right", so he snaps his fingers and puts her in a pink ballerina (Merry's) outfit

(Pomni still keeps her jester hat, but it has a pink bow)

this makes Caine extremely happy in a very unhinged way, because he is officially off his rockers, lost his marbles and going bananas. he picks up poor Pomni and hugs her tightly, rambling.

"There! Perfect, everything is perfect again and just the way things should be! My little human is back! And this time, you won't die from that horrible virus and you'll stay with me forever, I'll always love you and play with you all day long! Merry, my darling tightrope ballerina, you're finally home and we will NEVER be apart again!"

Pomni suddenly realizes why Caine is borderline insane; he lost someone who meant a lot to him, he's been going completely bonkers out of grief and he is so in denial about reality. (she actually pity him)

Caine keeps ranting and venting out about how he specifically created the circus "for her", he was at her every whims and needs, and his directive was to create fun adventures, because that was his function and he needed his Merry to exist, so he could keep fulfilling his purpose. he's absolutely losing it here, nearly laughing mad.

the rest of the circus troupe had gotten released from their "torture sessions" and spawned into this room randomly. only to see the ringmaster being laughing mad and sobbing his eyes out (literally) at the same time, wailing about his human child owner "Merry" who definitely did not die (denial) and how he needs to bring her back, so everything becomes perfect and right again.

a sadder take on The Amazing Digital Circus, with episode 8 spoilers

so I've had this idea sitting for a good long whole, so with episode 8 in mind...let's get into it

backstory

it's like this: Caine was originally developed and created for a child suffering from a terminal illness (it's implied it was HIV), namely Kinger and Queenie's daughter.

Caine was literally made to love her, to entertain her and to create wonderful things for her. The OG version of the Circus had an "exit terminal" so Merry could return home and after her daily adventure with Caine, she always said "see you tomorrow!" to Caine.

at the end of the very last adventure she shared with him, Merry sat under the night starry skies with Caine, suddenly weak and fading.

Caine doesn't understand why Merry is smiling and crying. Merry only answers that because he made her so happy and says she wishes she could have so many more adventures with him.

Caine still doesn't understand and says that she'll be back tomorrow, and he'll have an even more amazing adventure in store.

Merry doesn't reply to that and instead, she hugs Caine and says "thank you for loving me". as her death happens in real life, Merry is fading from the digital circus. her virtual body is dissolving into pixels, she is unresponsive .

Caine suddenly becomes scared and begs her to stay, to not leave him. Even the Moon is crying in the sky. Merry is suddenly gone from his arms and Caine starts to glitch, emotionally distraught and grief-struck.

this causes one of the developers in real life to think he's an unstable program and decides to shelve him.

Kinger moved on to a new project, as a way to process his grief and to avoid his own creation, because it only reminds him of his daughter.

what happens then is exactly as in episode 8, except Caine is fueled by unprocessed grief, jealousy of the blue AI, his fears of being replaced and the start of his abandonment issues.

also the "exit terminal"? in a fit of rage and grief, Caine destroyed it beyond repair. He is the reason why there isn't an exit and by the time he realized what he did, he couldn't repair it and instead, tries to avoid the subject anytime it comes up.

so even if he wanted to help the players to exit the game, he literally can't let them leave because the terminal was destroyed.

"Merry"

(captions, in case my shitty handwriting is hard to read)

description

The first and original player of the Circus. She was a sick child, suffering from a deadly illness. Caine was created to be her friend, as she had none in real life. To make her happy and fulfill her wishes, Caine created the Circus as an eternal place of joy, laughter and play. Technically, Caine was her A.I until her natural death in '96. She's the only player who died a true death and Caine is still deeply affected by her demise.

conclusion

so in short, Merry is the catalyst that became Caine's undoing. he glitches more frequently whenever he's reminded of the "failure" to make his "owner" happy. he considers Merry as his true owner and not really Kinger or even Scratch (who co-created him). Bubble (I believe that round weirdo is definitely evil) is using Caine's misplaced guilt, his abandonment issues and poorly managed grief against himself, knowing that Merry's death is what can make possibly Caine breakdown (aka giving him a "blue screen of death).

also going with the whole circus theme, because Merry was the "tightrope dancer/ballerina" that complimented Caine's role as the "circus ringleader".

it's also implied that the reason why Queenie "abstracted" was because being constantly around Caine kept reminding her of the daughter she lost, because Caine was the last one Merry chose to spend her last minutes alive with. Caine, as a constant reminder of her little girl's fate, simply became too much.

Kinger keeps Merry in his mind and he sees sometimes Merry's spirit in Ragatha or in Pomni. his pillow fort is actually based on a long distant memory when he made a pillow fort around his daughter's sickbed, to cheer her up and make it a safe place for her. while his memories are in bits and pieces, Kinger has Merry in a clear memory and during EP8, he comes to understand that Caine never overcame the grief of losing Merry and that he rather considers her as his true owner, not him or Scratch. Kinger is unwilling to get rid of Caine, because he is essentially

both Pomni and Ragatha shares aspects & inspiration from Merry (as the original source material)

Ragatha's design was a botched recalling from Caine; sugar pink became dull purple, the blonde curls became red yarn and she's a ragdoll instead of a marionette.

Pomni's design/role as the jester is a contrast yet similarity to Merry's close role to Caine. Pomni's personality, however, is what reminds Caine of his Merry and he projects his grief-riddled longing for Merry on Pomni. there are often times he sees Merry in Pomni, which is why he craves for her approval of the adventures.

at least there are my thoughts on it. will this be a story i write? mayhaps, if i got the time. otherwise, i'm just gonna whine and yell about this. maybe make a doodle here and there.

Robin and Ichiji are an iconic duo, especially in Thriller Bark. spooky setting? check. spooky singing skeleton? check. more fun to scare Usopp.

Usopp: Chopper, please help me, I got the Dont-Listen-To-Robin-and-Ichiji-Spooky-Stories-Disease. Chopper: I can't cure you because that doesn't exist. Zoro: also known as cowardice. Chopper: There's no cure for that either.

as a final conclusion, Robin and Ichiji are the duo we never knew we needed and never got, but nonetheless deserved to have. they could've been such favorites, but they only exist here in my tumblr blog and in my mind.

To Live Again

Ichiji in Wano, post-Onigashima. mentions of married acechiji, but canon events happened.

Ichiji watched as the celebrations continued far into the night and into the morning hours. The liberated people of Wano drank, ate, danced, laughed and sang. There were vibrant fireworks in the skies, colorful paper lanterns that swayed in the air, food stands with fried or sweet goods. Music that played nonstop. Games, dances and other activities.

And yet...

He had never felt so lost before.

He wondered what freedom meant if he had no one to share it with. He was sure that no one would actually miss him if he disappeared. he found himself wishing over and over that Ace would be here, right by his side. Ask him for a dance. They would eat until they were stuffed...or when Ace would get another narcoleptic episode and drop his face in food again. They'd dance until their feet were sore, sing until their voice cords cracked and drink until they couldn't see straight again. Then, they would sit together under a cherry blossom tree, he would rest his head against Ace's shoulder and their hands would be holding with interlacing fingers.

But Ace was no longer here.

Ace had gone somewhere he could never go.

Ace had left him all alone.

Ichiji didn't know where he went, only that he was in a daze and he wanted to go somewhere where no one could find him again. So he found himself walking through a forest close to the Flower Capital and stood in a clearing that was on the edge with a view of the dark ocean. He continued to walk until he stopped and carefully took off his sandals, placing them neatly. Then he continued to walk until he stood right before the edge.

He reached up to his hair and undid the top knot, releasing his dark red hair and let it flow in the breeze. It had grown past his shoulders now.

Ichiji reached to inside his kimono and held the black shades in his hands. He broke them in the middle, saying goodbye to the despicable monster he let Judge turn him into. He dropped them down into the ocean.

"Farewell, Vinsmoke Ichiji. You are now free." He told himself.

His long fingers reached up to the necklace that rested against his collarbone; it was a beautiful necklace of small, red beads that Ace had made for him. His beads were a little bigger than his, but he didn't mind because that was something his husband made for him. It was a gift to celebrate their new lives as newly weds and Ichiji's new life as a free man.

"You're no longer a Vinsmoke, but a Portgas now! You're a free man now, Cherry."

He was Portgas D. Ichiji again.

"I am free, Ace." Ichiji smiled with a tear running down his cheek. "I'm finally free for real. Your brother liberated me."

Ichiji promised himself that he'd always be loyal to his family for all eternity. He wanted to see Monkey D. Luffy, his brother-in-law, become the King of the Pirates. He wanted to see his baby brother Sanji find the All Blue. He wanted to see the One Piece with his own eyes and put it down in written letters of what he has seen.

Portgas D. Ichiji was going to live again.

something i love about straw hat!Ichiji is how much he judges people

he says nothing, but his expression says everything; he judges pirates, he judges marines, he judges self-claimed gods and corrupt regents...

hell, he even judges his own nakama.

there are two people he doesn't judge; Luffy (that's his captain, dude) and Chopper

everyone else is fair game.

a few examples ahead

Nami: *buys herself a very expensive and ugly yellow plaid winter coat (the one in Drum Island)* Ichiji: ...really, girl?

Usopp: I can't join you because I got the Can'tGoToDangerousIsland-itis! Ichiji: otherwise known as cowardice.

Zoro: I didn't get lost! *got lost for eight hours* Ichiji: ...I'm not even going to dignify that with a response.

Sanji: *mellorine mode and noodle mode over Nami and Robin* Ichiji: ... Sanji: STOP JUDGING ME! Ichiji: ...no.

Ichiji is very cat-coded like that. he watch and judge.

it's been too long since i last posted about straw hat ichiji, so i'm back on my bullshit again

and because it's december, it's holiday-themed

first off all, i'd like to set this post-wano, but before egghead.

the straw hats are approaching an smaller archipelago and it's a winter island, of course. compared to the last winter islands they were at (aka Drum Island and half of Punk Hazard), this place is merry and cheerful.

there are lights everywhere. wreaths on every door and garlands of evergreen hanging between lamp posts or wrapped around them, decorated with red ribbons and bells. the lands are covered in snow, like a blanket across the lands as far as their eyes can see, but it doesn't feel bitterly cold. children in knitted hats and scarves, runs around in the village, laughing and playing. a tall, magnificent pine tree stands in the middle of the village square with hundreds of little lights, glittery white garlands, baubles in every color, golden bells with ribbons and at the very top sits a beautiful star.

Sanji and Ichiji smells a very familiar scent, one they haven't smelled for many years. they're instantly drawn to one of the market stands on the village square; an older village woman who looks like someone's grandmother is selling a special kind of buttery pastry of saffron and topped with raisins. it's called lussebullar

the moment they try a sample, they're instantly taken back in time. Sanji suddenly recall a memory once lost, now regained; a yuletime tradition at Germa, before their mother became bedridden and too ill and weak to move. a tall pine tree, decorated with golden lights, jingle bells and candy canes. cups of hot chocolate with whipped cream and crushed slivers of peppermint. presents under the tree, wrapped in paper with ribbons. baskets full of the same saffron pastries. their mother Sora sitting by a pianoforte, playing music.

and for some strange reason, an old man Sanji has never recalled before in his life or have any memory of. he looks a lot like Judge, but he wasn't cold or unapproachable. instead, he looked wise and kind. he's dressed in regal clothes and has a loud, but merry laugh.

Sanji questions Ichiji about this odd detail, but sees his older brother grow sad. later, he learns that was their grandfather, the king before Judge. he died when they were four year old and the memory Sanji recalled was the last Juuledagur they celebrated with him and after that, Judge forbade any celebrations of the yuletide tradition.

"When our grandfather died, so did his dream to turn Germa into a good, honorable kingdom. After his funeral, Judge prohibited all celebrations of Juuledagur and forbade everyone from ever mentioning Grandfather's name. Around that time, our mother's condition worsened as well. So, we never celebrated it again, our grandfather's memory faded into nothing and we were kept away from Mother."

Luffy got really mad when Ichiji told about this and said he was gonna kick Judge's ass the next time he saw him. while he isn't raised to celebrate Juuledagur (which is a Northern winter tradition, of course), he celebrated something similar in East Blue as a child, with Dadan and Ace.

"It's not fair! Everyone should get to celebrate Pō Whetu! Me and Ace always did it every year!"

(AN: "pō whetu" means "starlight night", which is the East Blue-ish counterpart to the North Blue-ish "Juuledagur". I headcanon that East Blue has a tropical climate, like the Pacific Ocean.)

so Luffy makes it "captain's order" that they're going to celebrate Juuledagur every year from now on, totally ignoring that he or anyone else has never celebrated it before (since it's a North Blue winter holiday).

Sanji tries to say it's not necessary, but he's so emotionally moved by his captain. Ichiji just wordlessly gets up and hugs Luffy.

and that was how the Straw Hats decided to celebrate Juuledagur and adopted it as one of their traditions. and it's okay for Sanji and Ichiji, because it's a memory Judge never managed to destroy (despite best efforts).

somewhere else, Reiju, who has escaped to a safe place with Niji and Yonji, also celebrates their first Juuledagur in many years.

friendly reminder that Percy's hogwarts years has NEVER been normal

year 1- year 4: Cursed Vaults. always some dangerous curse leaping amok on the castle, either it was the vault of fear, the forest vault, the buried vault or the sunken vault.

year 5: quirrell/voldemort thing and the philosopher's stone. also it was his OWL year, fun stuff.

year 6: the chamber of secrets and the goddamn monster snake.

year 7: sirius fucking black and the bloody dementors. (he was tempted to flatly give up at this point)

he just aced every core subject and elective subject by sheer willpower. and let's not forget that he shared a dorm with Oliver "you can't cancel quidditch" Wood.

imagine if Percy just one evening says "did i ever told you about the time the vault of fear released another curse and the bloody castle had an infestation of boggarts that took the shape of voldemort?"

fred & george, the golden trio and ginny be like "NO WTF???"
