Onboarding (19 Jan)

My itinerary said I had a 2pm session while others had 1 or 1.30pm but we decided to go together as a whole apartment since we thought it’d be like check-in where they weren’t so strict with times. We arrived at Vista Way (one of the other 3 apartments) at 1pm but had to wait till 2pm. In the meantime, though, we just started chatting with the other people there; most were from AU/NZ.

When it was time for us to go in, they got us in groups of 6 and we gave them our housing ID’s. The lady got us to huddle around as she talked about Disney look, and checked each of our hair, eyeglasses, tattoos to make sure we fit the requirements they gave to us before.

When it was time, we went into the room, and a guy pulled out our folders using the ID’s we gave to them before and gave a quick explanation of the forms we had to fill out.

I-94: a document showing our entry into US. We thought we had to print it out. We only needed the I-94 doc number from this. W-4 form: Tax form we just had to sign I-9 form (Employment Eligibility Verification): we had to fill in details such as our name and DS-2019 number (we were given a sheet to help us fill it in exactly). Work/training itinerary: this told us what we could expect for our three training days ahead and when/where/what time they occurred. Envelope with payroll card: this is how we get paid by Disney. It’s a Visa debit card which we use like a cash card basically.

Someone comes to check our forms before we line up for someone to actually fill out the second page of the other form for us. They only gave us our passport, itinerary and payroll envelope back to us. We then went to another line to get a brief introduction from a person who has a rough knowledge of our area, e.g. mine was entertainment.

I was told what to wear, when/where I might get my costume. The guy said I was at Animal Kingdom as entertainment costuming hostess, so I’ll be helping to look after the costumes they use in shows! Also, he said that I might work at other parks too, which is something I really hope I might do! He asked if there were any questions I wanted to ask, though his replies mostly ended up being “I’m not sure, you should call up the costuming number to get an answer.”

So that’s pretty much it for onboarding! I got out and went back to the front to meet my roommates so we could go to Target for some homeware/food shopping.

Update (9 Feb): I’m currently working in the character room at Animal Kingdom, but might get trained to work in the Carnivale, Finding Nemo or Lion King shows!

Hi! I'm considering doing the AU/NZ program in August 2016. I've read a few of your answers about the entertainment roles but I was wondering if you knew if you are allowed to go to auditions while on the program? I'm a dancer and performer and I would love to do a dance role or a face character role and I didn't know if once you were on the program you could audition and switch roles if you get accepted? Thanks xx

Hey anon! Yes you can go to entertainment auditions throughout your program, because one of my housemates went. I’m not 100% sure of there are extra steps involved in swapping roles once you pass auditions, due to the nature of our program, but it can be done. Good luck with applications!

Hi there. Just recently my university posted a flyer about Disney reps coming to our university for a presentation followed by interviews. I really want to attend this but I am unsure on what I need to do to prepare. Should I fill out the online application before I go, or do I just show up on the day? I read on your "preparing for the interview" post that you brought a copy of your online application, but then on another post I read that you didn't apply online. Any help would be great! Thanks!

Hey there! I’m sorry I’m not going to be a whole lot of definitive help on this, seeing as they’ve changed the process since I applied, but, I personally would do the online application before the presentation. Just because that way I’d be totally prepared for whenever they wanted to do interviews, be it the same day as the presentation or a couple of days later.If you’d like any help doing the application or have any other questions you need answered feel free to ask, and good luck!
