ANNOUNCEMENT:
Bridgerton S3 coming in less than 24 hours
Me realising I won't be able to watch the episodes for atleast a week
Err, yep. That's my reality. So to avoid spoilers from all you lovelies I am not going to be on tumblr for atleast a week.
Don't worry! I'm queuing some posts/OG content but I don't want to risk spoilers. But boy oh boy, wait until I'm back and you'll be getting a shedload of late reblogs 😂😂
It was warm enough for shorts for a few seconds
So the podcast Geeks Guide to the Galaxy did a panel discussion a few months back that I only just caught now about Jewish Science Fiction and Fantasy and not only do I have more book recs from it, but this panel is kinda AMAZING at talking about why Jews feel completely disconnected from most fantasy narratives and it just NAILED it.
You can look up the podcast on iTunes and listen to the specific episode. I HIGHLY recommend doing so. The authors are actually very good at mentioning that they’ve been brought on a panel to talk about Jewish sci-fi, but they can only talk about Ashkenazi sci-fi (no one invited anyone else probably because the show is run by goyim who may not have thought to look)
They get into the origins of superheroes and tikkun olam in fantasy being the crux of what Jewish readers need to see in order to find connection in a lot of speculative work. One of the panelists does a great takdown of why Harry Potter, while amazing, isn’t very captivating for Jews nor can we see ourselves in those kinds of fantasy stories because we’re too busy wondering why the fuck the wizards with all their power aren’t using it to help solve real fundamental problems in the world. (Hats off to Jewish HP fandom for consistently bringing this into every discussion I’ve ever seen)
Anyway check it out if you want a small bit of faith in why you’re involved in speculative, genre, and fandom works. Because this genre wouldn’t fucking exist without us.
Also here were some of the books mentioned. I’m getting all of them. I’ve listed to Amazon for details, but I encourage you to find other ways of getting them:
Wandering Stars: An Anthology of Jewish Fantasy and Science Fiction
More Wandering Stars: An Anthology of Outstanding Stories of Jewish Fantasy and Science Fiction
People of the Book: A Decade of Jewish Science Fiction & Fantasy
King of Shards
