Has anyone heard of the musical documentary “All is Calm”? It’s about the Christmas Truce of 1914. I can’t remember who was in it or who produced it, but I think I saw it on television several years ago—except it was a stage production. They pieced together found texts from the era—letters, poems, official reports and statements—along with soldier’s songs and Christmas songs. It was a very moving story and the music was beautiful.

I was just thinking Edwin Payne might appreciate it. He was alive then. Maybe he heard about the truce. Maybe had a brother serving overseas who was there. Maybe there are ghosts of the fallen who still gather every year to sing those same songs.

It makes me wonder if that could ever happen again. If the power of music could bring people together and for just a short while, they could see each other as people instead of as the enemy. I think you see the best and the worst of humanity in a war. All sorts of formerly impossible things can happen.
