most people return to work after a vacation feeling relaxed.
I have returned to work and immediately remembered why I hate working retail
Poisson is bugging me again!
We have a new winner for “Most Ridiculous Alterations Request” my shop has recieved
Last Saturday at around 2pm my business partner was faced with the conundrum of how to best (i.e. politely) answer the following message we received through yelp:
“Hi! I have a same-day alterations request! I have a bridesmaids dress that is too tight and will need to be made bigger so that it fits. I also need halter-type straps added.”
This is not remotely a same-day request. We can rarely do same-day alterations that are more than just super simple repairs or occasionally a super simple pants hem. We saw this at 2pm on a Saturday which is our busiest day, and we close at 6. But this. Like. Letting something out is harder than taking it in because you can never be sure if there is enough excess fabric in the dress to make it big enough. Unless this person came in with halter straps ready made to put on the dress, this means we have to make them, which means finding fabric to match the dress, and while we have a sizeable scrap collection, we’re not a fabric store. There’s no guarantee we have enough of the right color in the right fabric, so we might have to go out and buy some, if we can find it in stores, or possibly order from an online fabric retailer. And that is before we actually measure the customer, pattern, and make the straps and THEN attach them.
Nothing about this is same-day or even next-day, is what I’m saying. I was in and out of a bridal fitting and my business partner Birdy was just sitting at a table, hunched over the phone, staring at this message with the look of someone just returned from war, and when I came over to ask if she was okay, her response was: “It’s that fucking scene from Cinderella with the little mice and birds, I swear to God. It’s ruined our profession forever. People think we can remake a whole goddamn dress in five minutes.”
And I was like, “Okay, I’ll just leave you alone.” Because there is no nice way to answer that question that is not “You’re a fucking idiot, you’re asking for a goddamn miracle.”
And then a couple minutes later, while I am still in the fitting room with my bridal customer, I hear Birdy shout, “OH MY GOD, SHE SENT THIS AT 6:35 LAST NIGHT!”
Y’all, we close at 7. This person was asking for something we couldn’t possibly have accomplished in four hours, AND SHE WAS MESSAGING US ABOUT IT 25 MINUTES BEFORE WE CLOSED.
@ anon how dare u, Hannah and I don’t have time to add a power rangers au to our roster
Dear Coworker in another department, I don't know your job. I can't help you do your job. I can't do your job for you. Kindly fuck off
oh god i could just imagine eris' little ginger kids running around now that you said you'd have very ginger kids 😭
You don't know me well enough to know my personality, but TRUST ME when I say they would be menaces. Not to Eris, of course. As a parent I imagine him as a "these children can do no wrong" because he's swung in the total opposite direction of his father. But I have some perspective. They are nightmare children.
