Cheap Trick - We are alright!
Teaching my kids gratitude is important to me as a parent. I don't want them growing up selfish, snot-nosed kids. Nor, do I want them growing up taking the opportunities, God has given our family or them, for granted. When I asked Ariel and Zion today what they are grateful for, my daughter really demonstrated a clarity around the fact that our life is not the normal experience for most black families. The conversation between her and Zion was beautifully humbling as they picked and unpacked their own thinking and shared in the perspectives of each other on this subject. I listened. I interjected sparingly, because I realized this was a moment of awakening for them and I did not want my thoughts to cloud the understanding God was bringing them to naturally. What struck me so much about the simplicity of their discussion was their youthful wisdom was clothed in more humility and empathy than most adults today have for one another. Her and Zion still argue like cats and dogs and drive me bananas sometimes with their shenanigans. Sometimes I worry, raising my kids on my own, if I am doing the best by them, or maybe I am not doing enough to help them grow into positive, global minded, free thinkers, unafraid to leave their mark on the world. Yet, it is moments like this these, that I am most grateful for. These moments of open and honest discussion, around our small brown dinner table, where no judgement is allowed only listening. It is in these moments, that I know, we are alright. What are you grateful for today? #brownkidstravel2 #wearealright #ourlifeabroad #gratitude #abudhabi #sheikzayedgrandmosque #uaeliving #parsonfamilyvalues
Today was simply Amazing! We've been ripping and running around since we've been here and today was all about playtime. No tours. No schedules. Just good old fashion Parson fun! I wish I could talk to you about Aleyya's new terrible tattoo 😂
Voice. (Dec. 10, 2011)
It feels miserable.
Being unable to speak for people
when they don't have a voice.
I'm yelling.
but no one must hear of it.
Not even myself.
Don't listen to what she says.
...but let's just try to understand:
We're all trying hard.
All of us.
Just keep walking,
and time will watch you go.
May fortitude stay by our side,
wherever we go.
大丈夫だから。
Okay?
