The environmental situation in Ecuador has been characterized as “one of the largest environmental disasters in history” by the Rainforest Action Networks in 2010. The oil pollution affecting the soil and the water coming from agriculture such as farming and fishing is, what we suspect, the leading cause for the sharp increase in serious illness in Ecuador. This is so sad. More and more people are developing cancer and other serious conditions and there has been an increase in the amount of miscarriages. Not only has it been devastating to our health but also to the health of the living organisms and animals around us. It is tearing the biodiversity apart with hundreds, if not thousands of different insects and animals dying and becoming endangered every single day. This will change the world as we know it and it is happening right in front of our eyes. It is not only affecting the biodiversity but also the economy. A teeny tiny part of the population is getting richer from all this destruction but the majority, especially in these developing countries are becoming poor and homeless. The money is going to the governments and people are going bankrupt from all their medical bills. Everything around us is dying and so are we. The situation in Ecuador is just one of many contributing to this chaos. But there is a light at the end of the tunnel, but that is a subject for a later post.
