HOMELESS?
As I was parking my car at the library this afternoon, a man was walking by at the same time and he said hello. My first impression was that this man was homeless. He was not dressed well and he had some bags with him. He was older and his face was weathered, the kind that says he’s been outdoors more than indoors for a long time. But he had a happy look about him and he gave me a big, easy smile that looked sincere as he said hello. I engaged him in conversation and we talked about the weather mostly and walking. But then we didn’t really have anything left to say and we both went on our way.
It was a really interesting meeting. There was not a single other person around, on a busy weekday afternoon, no neighbourhood sounds that I recall in the background. It was just me and him in focused conversation. What stays with me is that he looked happy and content.
I wish I would have had more to say, but it was an off day for me. I was very hot and feeling a little stressed over things. But this fellow seemed well adjusted to the temperature and seemed not to have a care in the world. That may or may not be the case at all. Who knows?
In that short exchange, what did he learn from me and what did I learn from him? Were we so different? Would I be surprised with his history and would he be surprised with mine?
His presence in my day lingers on. I’m left thinking that I didn’t really know how to talk to him. What do we say to the homeless? I didn’t have any cash with me and I wondered, even if I had, would it have been taken the wrong way if I offered it to him? He didn’t ask me for anything. What did he really need?
I’m left with so many questions that I have no answers to. Maybe it’s time to educate myself on both the questions and the answers required in such a situation.
Did I make a difference in his day? He certainly made a difference in mine!

"... STOIC, LEATHERY FACE"
“… STOIC, LEATHERY FACE”
A leathery, weathered face,
… Stoic, sun- burned, no line erase!
Immobile work- hardened hands,
Clasped behind back as he stands!
Weary from the toil of the day…
Endowing field to lay!
With deepest gazing eye,
Sweeping the western sky!
Toiling to foretell and guess!
Face not revealing of plans, more or less;
Made for sowing tomorrow;
If the weather doesn’t bring sorrow…
Bearing in his brain,
Th…
