Are you an audiobook fan? Here are my Top Ten audiobooks for 2021. We Begin at the End has a great story and great characters. The Warehouse makes you wonder what might happen. This year’s best was Hench by Natalie Zina Walschots. The GR synopsis starts with “Anna does back-office work for a mid-level villain.” The world and story she creates is nuts. And the performance from narrator, Alex McKenna, is phenomenal. We Begin at the End is the buzzy book from Chris Whitaker. Some have liked it - some have loved it. I’m in the “You need to meet these characters right now!” group. “Walk is Sheriff of the little coastal California town he grew up in. He still lives with the fact that his testimony sent his friend, Vincent King, to prison for 30 years. And now Vincent is coming home - after his car accident that killed a little girl. Outlaw Duchess Day Radley just wants to take care of her brother Robin. Tragedy sends them away. Duchess fears the man, Darke, will come for her. And she must take her vengeance...” This is crime fiction but different. The characters are wonderful from Whitaker. Walk plods along - trying to make sense of what’s happened - trying to investigate - and fighting his body the whole time. Duchess gives no quarter to anyone. You just want to grab Duchess and tell her you’ll take care of her. Something she does sets Darke on her. And it leads to more tragedy. Darke has his own tragic story and Whitaker gives him some humanity. The big surprise twist at the end was totally unexpected 😮 Read this book for the characters that Whitaker gives us. I hope we get a book down the road where Duchess and Robin are adults. The audiobook narrator, George Newbern, was part of the cast for Goodnight Beautiful. One issue with the audiobook - in the book there may have been space between scenes but in the audiobook the sentences were read without a pause. Several times I was scratching my head at the quick jump between scenes and places.
