Wednesday in the Wild: Evening Edition

Check out these far out looks on Buzz Aldrin and Bill Nye in Nick Graham’s 2017 Menswear runway show at New York Fashion Week! I’m impressed that Buzz has a “Get Your Ass to Mars” shirt that matches his silvery look perfectly. And Bill Nye’s blazer is most definitely out of this world.*

Famous astronaut helps launch local woman's business

An astronaut posted about a St. Louis woman's jewelry line on social media. And then, blast off. Her business skyrocketed.

Check out this awesome video brought to our attention by Meg Watzke. It features Bea Doheny, founder of Astronobeads, and astronaut Scott Kelly!

How much awesome is in this photo??!?! I think we’d have to measure it in billions solar masses! Everyone’s favorite Olympic live-tweeter Leslie Jones posted this photo with medal-winning USA gymnasts Aly Raisman and Simone Biles, and luckily for us Erika Hamden noticed Leslie’s startorialism!

Leslie’s bag is “red galaxy” print from @jansport, available as both a fanny pack (aka bum bag) and “Driver 8″ (heh) wheeled backpack. The print looks realistic enough to be (nice nebulosity & diffraction spikes!), but I don’t recognize it as an actual astronomical image.

Today’s very special #WednesdayintheWild is ... us! In a magazine! Available in France! Specifically, the July/August 2016 issue of Astronomie Magazine.

The article about astronomy in fashion is by astronomer & science writer Yael Naze, and our little box appears alongside photos of astrofashion from @shadowplaynyc, Valentino, and Chanel! (Update - we’re now approaching 1,700 posts!)

Are there any startorialists in France who could pick us up a couple copies?!

I was in Sweden at the Cool Stars 19 astronomy research conference last week, and I was thrilled to see many startorial colleagues! I didn’t get as many photos as I would have liked, but this one I absolutely had to post! @amnhnyc REU student Briley Lewis is wearing one of our all-time faves, the Heart and Solar System dress from @modcloth.

The more I see this dress, the more I’m convinced the pattern is based on real astronomical images. I’ve long recognized the starburst galaxy M82 and edge-on spiral M104, but in Briley’s dress I think I see the Orion Nebula (on this skirt) and maybe even V838 Mon (the colors are adjusted but the shapes are there). The pattern placement is different on every dress so more and more objects are apparent each time I see it - check out previous posts to see for yourself!
