As we have been slowly going through the history of design week by week, I thought it was particularly relevant to my grandpa’s old stamp collection that he gave me and I have been continuing for him. This little book has stamps from all over the world from about 1890-2000, and it is really interesting to look at what design motifs and styles went in and out of fashion over the years.

Architexture

‘Architexture’ was a small workshop activity we were proposed to undertake. This is where we had to find type letters in our built in and/or outside environment, not manipulating the subject matter at all, just using the tools of cropping and rotating with a phone.

I decided to take my photographs in my backyard, and I was surprised that just by observing an environment I am so familiar with in a different lens caused me to see letterforms I had never previously noticed. I went around to different parts of my backyard, trying to picture different elements as letterforms if I were to crop parts out. In the end I found six different letters. My favourite composition is the letter ‘a’, as it was a less noticeable letter form where the image had to be rotated 90 degrees, as well as the way the horizontal line of the ‘a’ is composed of a background element while the other two parts are in the foreground.

Overall, this was a fun activity that was very well catered for the quarantine situation we are currently in. It taught me that the pure act of observation can be a good form of creativity, and that finding inspiration doesn’t mean you have to venture out in the world. Even our familiar home environment can spark creativity. This task also alluded to the quote by Hermann Zapf: “Typography is two-dimensional architecture”. Fascinating letter forms were able to be discovered by architectural forms. This seemed to relate to our class’ exploration of the Bauhaus movement, where their geometric san serif typography style was also similar to their structured industrial architecture. This serves to indicate that different elements of design can all have an influence on each other. This will be interesting to take into consideration in the zine assignment, where the typography used would be very effective if it visually reflected the overarching topic or specific questions.

week eight lecture

Futurism. Following last week’s lecture on Bauhaus, futurism was introduced as a response to the often strict world of minimalism, grids and ‘rules’ that surrounded this new era of modernist design. Futurism was an Italian Art and Print Movement that aimed to capture the dynamism and energy of the the modern world, embracing new technologies. This included revolutionary machines such as the car and the automobile, which represented movement and acceleration. The Manifesto of Futurism listed all the things that Futurists embraced and technologies they wanted to see more of. This was translated into paintings and artworks, represented a more ‘lived experience’, a sense of time and speed, capturing moments differently and more humanly than a camera would. Interestingly, as Karen noted, the role of paintings had changed during this time period; they had been freed from their role as a representative medium as people could now use photography.

One of the examples Andy and Karen presented was the Parole in Libertà, I found looked drastically different from any of the other printed publications that we had previously learnt about and were being made at the time. The words had been freed and liberated, and it was radicalising the way that language was being used. ‘Type had taken on a voice’, as Karen noted. Funnily, it was considered a very violent design at the time. Print up until then had become a mathematical harmony and the futurists were breaking these rules.

This piece is titled ‘In the Evening, Lying on Her Bed, She Reread the Letter from Her Artilleryman at the Front’. After researching some futurists works, the typography and meaning behind it struck me. It reminded me of the animation that Andy had showed in the lecture, with the dramatic and animated voice narrating the words that flew onscreen. This ink work shows how the woman is reading the letter she has been sent from the soldier through the dramatic stylisation of the words, using onomatopoeia to exaggerate these sounds. The messiness and violence of the wordforms and type, clashing into each other is representative of this violence of war. It had captured what futurism was all about - showing speed, showing an abstract view of the movement of reality.

I also loved this painting I found, which depicts a flamenco dancer performing to the sound of the violin in the background. The various shapes and forms of her dress depicts the rapid movement of the dance, and Severini even applied real small, metal sequins to the dress to pick up the light and flicker, further capturing her distinct movements as she dancers. It almost looks like a fractured mirror in that several different parts of the painting depict the same facial or body shape, just slightly changed, as if the artist had blinked and was still painting. Again, movement and form are the driving values behind this piece; a perfect example of futurism in action.

Connor in Shanghai - SJTU - Week 8: Exploring and Suzhou

One of the first things I did this week was go on an adventure exploring more niche parts of Shanghai by myself at night. I took one of the blue hello bikes, and decided to ride west and see how far I could go. It actually turned out to be a fun decision, as I left at about 12 am and got back around 4 am, much later than I expected. It was extremely peaceful and interesting, and I didn't really have much to worry about as China is one of the safest countries in the world for walking alone at night.

One of the things I found first on my bike ride was a night market, one of only a few places in Shanghai that is open well past 10 pm. While there, I drank some delicious tea and had skewers made right in front of me. There was so many dogs and people up playing card games, I was fascinated.

After the night market, I biked for a couple more hours, crossed a river, explored a small water town, and found these streets where all the cars and trucks were strangely parked on the side of the road, while one end was closed off. Finally, I ended the night by getting some sushi.

Later in the week, we got the amazing opportunity to visit the national center for Huawei. Normally, foreigners are not allowed to visit, however, we got special access through SJTU and our program, so we were able to take a tour of the company.

Our tour guide told us all about the company and the work life here in China, while we explored the area, which was absolutely massive and beautiful. We even got to ride electric scooters around the campus to get back to the beginning.

For our friend Leon's birthday, we went to Haidilao. It's been a tradition so far to go to Haidilao whenever it's someone's birthday, as the will always come over to you with a cake prop and sing happy birthday in Chinese. Sometimes, they will even do a special noodle dance where they stretch long noodles and dance back and forth. The long noodles represent longevity of life and it tends to bring good luck to eat long noodles on one's birthday.

Finally, that weekend, we took a day trip to Suzhou, a nearby city. The lake was so scenic and pretty, we stayed there for a while. We were originally drawn to Suzhou for "the pants" which are a large building that vaguely resembles a pair of metal pants. Unfortunately, we weren't able to see them as we didn't have enough time, but I was able to see them far in the distance in the picture below.

During our time in Suzhou, we had so many people approach us and ask for photos with us because we were foreigners and asking us to sing their notebooks in English, it was so interesting and I've never experienced anything like that before.

We even were able to board a ferris wheel that took us up above the city skyline next to the lake, and we were able to see across the entire city. By the time it touched down on the other side it was already dark, and we were lucky enough to be at the very top during sunset.

After that, we ate at a fancy Indian food restaurant, which was delicious and a nice change of pace in the food, as there doesn't tend to be much Indian food in china. Finally, we got on the high speed train back to Shanghai for the night.
