Elena Ferrante’s Notes for Her Weekly Guardian Column
- What do I think about the intense political situation developing? I think several things. No, not that. I have certain thoughts but I choose not to reveal them.
- Should Scotland separate? Whatever Scotland may be thinking, everyone is entitled to choose their own style of being in the world. That is not a vote for secession. (Nor is it the opposite.)
- What to do about Syria? I hope someone answers this, and soon. It is not my place to speak out about matters like this. Nor is it my choice.
- Are we reading less than we used to? Who knows. I read, but only when I want to and in a mode I don’t wish to reveal and feel it’s my right not to reveal.
- Whether I think there is a supernatural realm, it’s not wise to disturb the spirits in case they exist. Just saying.
- Hard to say. The Robert Forster-led Go-Betweens were timeless, but the Grant McLennan Go-Betweens were almost more intoxicating from a pop craftsmanship point of view. Loved both iterations, refuse to reveal which I ultimately prefer.
