PLEASE.
He really couldn’t be any luckier, he knew. And in truth, he could hardly believe it.
Cool air from outside drifted in from the crack under his front door. He’d noticed it when it had been open--- just a few moments ago--- to let the lady in; it lingered as he took her coat. Of course, he quickly invited her in. His best friend— truly, his best— had already seen fit to stop by. And so, after settling in his newest guest by the fire, he left them alone--- his best friend and almost-protégé--- to fetch something from the laundry to keep the upcoming winter outside where it belonged.
He overheard them talking, mumbles from a distance. And soon after, he heard laughter. At that. he couldn’t help but smile. It was wonderful to have guests, always. But, it was even more wonderful to have people he cared for so deeply. And to see them getting along so easily—
He returned to the room with a tea tray, loaded with three cups and as many snacks as he could carry. It wobbled slightly as he leaned to set it at the table. Both, he noted, reached out to help. And soon enough, they all found themselves laughing, grinning, something of the sort---
He couldn’t have been luckier… and happier, too.
