Lawby: Cat Bed
“Roby?” Law asked, looking around confused, “have you seen my hat?”
“Your hat?” she asked.
“My hat. I know I had it when I came in,” he told her, continuing to search the living room.
“Well, where was the last place you remember having it?” Roby asked, confused as he was. Law wasn’t normally one to misplace things, especially not something as important to him as his hat. That would be like misplacing his sword, which she noticed was currently sitting in the umbrella stand.
“I thought I put it on the side of the couch here, but I can’t find it,” Law told her, tossing couch cushions on the floor in a panic.
“Hey, watch it!” Roby snapped at the surgeon. He’d almost hit Onni with one of the cushions.
Preoccupied with his cavity search of the couch, Law ignored her, muttering something about getting back to his ship before the tide went out.
Roby went over to pick up the carelessly tossed cushion and noticed that Onni was curled up on something white and fluffy. Curious. She didn’t remember buying him a new cat bed. Moving closer to investigate, she realized that Onni’s new “cat bed” was actually Law’s hat.
“I found your hat,” Roby said, scooping up the cat and giving him a cuddle. She handed the hat over to Law, who sniffed it and made a face.
“This smells like cat,” he complained. He gave the hat a few shakes to remove the cat fur before jamming it on his head. “Why couldn’t your mangy mongrel use a proper cat bed instead of my hat? It’s going to smell for days now.”
“Onni isn’t mangy!” Roby told Law indignantly, giving her cat another cuddle. “No, you’re not mangy, are you sweetie?” Roby nuzzled her face into Onni’s fur. “That mean old man called you mangy, but you’ll show him, right?”
“I’m not that old,” Law groused.
Roby ignored him and continued nuzzling and talking to her cat. “If that mean old man didn’t want you to use his hat for a cozy cat bed, he shouldn’t have left it out then, huh? Maybe next time he’ll put it somewhere safe.”
Rolling his eyes, Law collected his sword from the umbrella stand. He bid Roby farewell, all the while muttering under his breath about crazy people who treat their pets like children.
Even so, Roby wasn’t particularly surprised when a package arrived a few days later addressed to Onni. Inside was a short note.
Dear Onni,
Please find enclosed one deluxe cat bed. Also, stay away from my hat.
Sincerely,
Trafalger Law
