Lawby: Heartbroken
Law entered Roby’s house, cursing under his breath.
“I take it your visit with Luffy didn’t go well?” Roby asked, looking up from the book she’d been reading.
“You could say that,” Law responded, wearily scrubbing his face with a hand. “Could you hold this for a minute?” he asked, handing over the object in his other hand. “I need to call my sister.”
Confused, Roby looked at the squishy cube she’d been handed. “Is this a heart?”
“Yeah, it’s Vincent’s,” Law told her, punching buttons on his phone.
“It- It’s not b-beating…” Roby stammered, biting her lip and backing away from the Surgeon of Death.
“I know,” Law said distractedly. He was pacing small circles on the floor as he waited for his sister to pick up the phone. Where was she?
Roby went pale, her white face a stark contrast to her bright red curls.
“You killed Vincent?”
“No, I did not kill Vincent!” Law shouted indignantly. Unfortunately, his sister chose that moment to pick up the phone.
“I’m so glad to hear that,” Wendy told him. “Did you call just to tell me that?”
“Don’t be a brat, of course not.” Law walked over to the quivering Roby to pick up the heart she’d dropped in shock. He gave her a quick peck on the cheek before continuing the conversation with his sister. “I need you to come over to get Vincent’s heart because that was all I could salvage after Luffy killed and ate him.”
“WHAT?!” he heard in stereo as both Roby and Wendy screamed at him.
“How long ago did this happen?” Wendy asked, recovering first.
“Maybe half an hour ago?” Law responded. “I mean, I wasn’t there when it happened, but the body seemed relatively fresh…”
“Okay,” his sister interrupted, “you need to get that heart into the freezer right now.”
“The freezer?”
“Yes, the freezer. You need to slow down cell death, so get that heart in the freezer! We’ll be over as soon as we can.”
Before Law could respond, Wendy hung up on him. Shrugging, Law went over to Roby’s freezer and stuck Vincent’s heart next to the frozen green beans.
Roby wanted to tell him that she didn’t want a human heart in her freezer, but she wasn’t sure how to actually tell him that. She’d had too many shocks in the last couple of minutes to really process what was happening. Vince was apparently dead, and not just dead but killed and eaten by Luffy. Eaten. By Luffy. She was never going to be able to look at the rubber boy the same way again.
“Okay, now that that’s taken care of, how was your day Roby?” Law asked, coming back over and putting his arms around her.
Roby twitched.
“What’s wrong, hon?”
“What’s wrong?” Roby exploded. “You come home carrying our friend’s heart and tell me that he was murdered by another friend, and then you invite your sister over and stick our friend’s heart IN MY FREEZER and you have the nerve to ask me what’s wrong?”
Law stared blankly at Roby for a few seconds. “I should have asked before inviting Wendy over to your house, huh?
Roby stared at the pirate in disbelief. “That is the least of my concerns,” she said, stomping away from Law. Sometimes she wondered what she saw in the gruff pirate. Her brother, Kidd, claimed Law was a good guy, but right now Roby wasn’t so sure about that assessment. He was just so blunt and, well, callous.
Roby scooped Onni out of his deluxe cat bed and gave him a quick cuddle before heading over to the couch. She sat down with a huff and started stroking Onni’s fur. As she continued petting the cat, Law settled himself on the couch next to her. He carefully handed her a steaming mug of hot chocolate and patted her knee gently.
“I’m sorry for upsetting you,” Law told her quietly. “Sometimes I forget you’re not used to death like the rest of us. I should have been more considerate. I’ll try harder next time, I promise.”
Oh right, Roby thought. That’s what she saw in him.
