If I die young - The Band Perry
in my head thinking abt a young Jiang Yanli who is so proud of herself after cooking up her very first meal without any help and rumaging through the kitchens to see what else she can make without any adult aid, while looking, she finds a worn and obviously well loved cook book hidden away from sight and flips back the cover to find the name Wei Changze, written neatly on the front page. Always ready for a cooking challenge, little Yanli keeps the cook book to learn more from.
When she asks the kitchen staff about who Wei Changze is, they look uncertain before throwing around a couple words like "quiet" and "servant" and tell her not to worry about it. One even advises her not to bring him up anymore at all. So she doesn't, but she does diligently study the recipes and tries to replicate them to the best of her ability.
When a little Wei Ying is later brought to Lotus Pier from the streets of Yiling, Jiang Yanli gives him a bowl of hot soup and he finds that it taste like the feeling of riding on his father's shoulders once again.
happy mermay to those that celebrate 🧜♀️
Changze, Changze! Come look at our baby! Isn't he the cutest? I want to bite his little toes!
Shhh, Changse. Let A-Ying sleep.
Lan Qiren had been certain that he’d seen the last of the infamous Cangse-sanren when she’d chosen to leave for Lotus Pier with the rest of the Jiang contingent, all moony-eyed over the servant to the Sect heir.
He thought he’d never have to put up with her antics again, like sneaking into his room in the dead of night to shave off the facial hair that he’d been trying so hard to grow out, and yet here he was, faced with a disciple who had come to specifically inform him that the troublemaker herself was just outside the wards seeking entry with her husband in tow.
…He also never thought she’d show up looking like she could give birth at any moment.
“A-Ren!” the menace cheered, smiling lighting up her face the same way it had years ago when they were children. “It’s so good to see you again!”
Lan Qiren could only stare at her as he tried to process what he was seeing.
Cangse-sanren–or Liang Xing, as she’d introduced herself during the lectures she’d participated in–was perched atop a donkey, stomach rounded with a child that was likely due any day now. She shifted on her perch, looking as if she were trying to climb down from the donkey’s back to greet her friend. Wei Changze materialized almost out of nowhere, placing a steadying hand on her waist.
“Easy, A-Xing,” he said softly. “Don’t hurt yourself.”
“Aiyah,” Liang Xing sighed, an adoring smile crossing her face. “I’m pregnant, not made of glass.”
“Pregnant,” Lan Qiren echoed weakly. “You’re pregnant.”
