The tale of two cities according to Heiko and Stephi - Part 146

  On Thursday it’s "Weiberfastnacht" in Germany, which is the start of carnival in the streets. At least in Cologne and some other cities which celebrate carnival this enthusiastically.  There is a nice tradition at "Weiberfastnacht" (which means "women’s carnival") of women cutting off the men's ties. And men having to wear the stump of the ties for the rest of the day.  Cutting off the tie is a symbol for cutting off male power. So, if the tie is a symbol of male power, then - at least I suppose - it means the longer the tie is, the more powerful the man who wears it. And if you’re a very powerful man, your very looooooong tie should be also red, so that even people from far away will see your male power. To cut off such a tie would be fantastic, wouldn't it? I personlly would also offer the extra service of cutting this powerful man's hair. So, here is an invitation to all men with such ties, and I promise in February the sun always shines in Germany.  This week’s praise goes to all women who cut off ties on "Weiberfastnacht" and for all men who are brave enough to wear them on this day.  Btw first photo is taken by Heiko and second one by me.

The Women's Carnival in Germany

A week of celebrations starts with Weiberfastnacht, or Fat Thursday, on Feb. 23. Originating in Bonn, it is tradition that the women “take back” the town — women symbolically storm the town hall and cut off the ties of the men, leaving them with a small kiss as compensation.

For the rest of the week, there are many processions and marches where different groups can create a float or a performance and take part in the festival. Much of the town dresses up, painting their faces and taking to the streets in celebration.

A Bavarian maker of Donald Trump-style wigs said her factory has been overwhelmed by demand for the U.S. president’s blond coiffure from Germans preparing for Carnival celebrations this week.

The six-day Carnival takes place in Catholic parts of Germany, and revelers in the Rhineland cities of Cologne, Düsseldorf and Mainz traditionally poke fun at politicians. One of the main targets of this year’s jokes is Trump.

Carnival is called the “fifth season” in the Rhineland. Revelers pack the streets to party, consume large amounts of alcohol and sing and dance. (Reuters)
