Happy #3FPFactsFriday ! Today’s fact is brought to you by 🐻. Most people have heard stories of the Bermuda Triangle, a patch of the Atlantic Ocean that allegedly turns navigation systems haywire and causes ships to disappear without a trace. Well, we have had a similar occurrence right here in NY State. Approximately 12 years ago New York City drivers had similar fears about a well-known and apparently terrifying portion of New York City known as Midtown. Around 2008, drivers in New York City started to complain that within a five block radius of the Empire State Building their cars would inexplicably stop working and refuse to start again. A manager of the NYC Tire and Auto Care in Hell‘s Kitchen reported that this would happen almost every day. He proceeded to report that if the same cars were picked up and transported a few blocks away they would start with no other mechanical help. The best guess as to a reason for this was that a radio signal broadcast beacon on top of the Empire State Building was disabling alarm systems in cars and preventing them from starting. Interestingly, around 2013, this particular phenomenon disappeared as mysteriously as it began. However, the broadcast beacon is still there.
