They [the Beatles] reveled in the Scream, especially Paul, always the pro-girl conscience of the band. In the 1964 documentary What’s Happening!, Paul, John, and Ringo sit in the back of a limo, just hours after landing in New York. On the drive from the airport to the hotel, Paul is already having the time of his life—he holds a transistor radio to his ear as it plays “I Saw Her Standing There” and says, “I love this.” The DJ tells the fans to tune in tomorrow at seven to hear the Beatles read their poetry; all three look at one another as Paul says, “We ain’t written no poetry.” But he was the one who didn’t tire of the pageant. Even in the footage of the chaotic Shea Stadium gig, Paul runs to the stage, while the other three trudge like they’re off to the gallows—he can’t wait to get there and bask in all that female attention.
