Hi!

I have always, always wanted to write a fic inspired by this fanvid, which I think about, like, at least once a week. In fact, this answer is a cheat, because I have written some of it.

James "meets" Q when he calls in, mid-mission, and R isn't available. Q guides him to safety, and they flirt a little, then go to dinner. In fact, they go to dinner several more times then sleep together a few more than that. I don't think it's a fully-fledged "relationship," but it becomes something that they both find comfort in.

James gets shot in Turkey, and spirals. He recovers from death, drinks himself to oblivion, and sleeps with anyone who notices him. Every time he picks up the phone to call (either M or Q), he wonders if he shouldn't just remain dead.

When he sees the news about MI6 getting blown up, he comes back. He stops by Q's first, an finds him both hurt and defensive. The next day, he finds out he's the new Quartermaster.

This will all involve Q having an actual name, which I know isn't everyone's cuppa. The one I usually use is Jonathan Boothroyd, and the surname is just a nod to previous films, not an indicator he's related to the major. But it can always be read as an alias!

I've got several different ideas for where it might go from there that involve either the leaked script, or Spectre coming after Q when he shuts down Nine Eyes. All of it will mean James has to confront what Q really means to him, and how desperately he wants to fix things.

Here's a snippet of the few scant paragraphs I have written so far:

Bond’s mouth goes dry. He had a whole speech prepared, but around the taste of his hangover, any suave words he'd had planned fail him.

“Why bother coming here?” Jonathan asks. The anger in his voice is the sharp and cutting kind, as powerful and deadly as a knife. “I’m out of whisky. So unless you want a cup of tea, which I’m sure you don’t, you should leave.”

“I wanted to see how you were.”

Jonathan laughs disbelievingly. “Just spiffing, obviously. I’ve been shitting rainbows for the last three months.”

oooooh say more about mark and father figure!!

i loveee this question.... so i see it about two relationships (cobel/both marks and imark/omark). to me imark looks at cobel like she's a maternal figure in his life and a huge part of their dynamic in s1 is present in the first part of the song. likewise for outie mark, he trusts selvig and it's stated that he basically confided a lot of personal information in her (losing his job, grieving gemma etc).

then when it gets to the 'i saw a change in you' part it's imark rebelling a bit in s1 and also when cobel finds out that the innies triggered the otc. when the key change happens it's a lot of s2 from imark's pov... like we see it when he doesn't trust cobel at all in the finale in the birthing cabin. on omark's part, when he sees her in 2x02 and is like you've seen what i've been through these past 2 years how could you do this!! and again with the mistrust in 2x09, both marks feel used and aren't going to be manipulated for cobel's agendas again.

i also think the song is interesting when i think about imark's relationship to his outie ("you remind me of a younger me" anyone?) especially the last part it's literally the finale when he doesn't trust his outie at all. the song starts off kind of in s2 when imark wants to help omark find ms casey and then ends with the script being flipped when imark makes the decision in the finale.
