sup tumblrinos. i appear to have written another fic - that i've already finished before starting to post it mind you for the weekly updates. this one is called at least it was here, and is much darker than my previous fics, so check the tags and such for content warnings, but know i've worked hard on this one and hope you like it if you can read it.
it was really sunny today so i decided to go on a walk in a dress i liked and then it started raining really badly halfway through so now my hair is really wet and my dress is stuck to me and i feel like ilse neumann
WAIT TRANS WENDLA X ILSE AU THOUGHTS??!!?? FEELINGS??!?? OPINIONS???!??
b-bruh how did u know,,,, this is my jam,,,,
So i’m writing a fic w/ trans ilse rn and it’s LIT im posting it here as soon as it’s not total crap!!
I’m not really sure if you talkin about trans!ilse or trans!wendla so i’m gonna talk about both of them :)
Trans!Ilse
so this is in a modern au obvi
ilse comes out as trans when they’re sophomores
and wendla is very supportive but a bit confused and Ilse is patient and explains it to her
some people are cool about it and some people (melchior) are like “uhh you cant just become female”
“well we all start as female as fetuses. with that theory, you can’t just become male, melchior” -ilse neumann
wendla is so supportive and takes ilse shopping for more feminine clothes and teaches her how to put on mascara and stuff
they date for a few months in high school
ilse ends it because she’s going through stuff with her past and dysphoria and wants to sort it all out before she dates someone
wendla’s sad but she understands
and they stay good friends
ilse goes on hormones when she’s 18 and it’s great
she’s so happy and it helps with dysphoria
wendla is going to college a few miles away and she and ilse get together every week or so
wendla loves to see her so happy
one day they’re walking in the snow in the city and it’s getting dark and it’s really pretty
and wendla, being the gay mess she is, holds ilse’s hand
ilse, instead of being cool, is like “uhhh you good?”
they’re both very flustered at this point and eventually ilse just kisses wendla
and it’s really cute and they get back together
eventually they get an apartment in the city
they string fairy lights up in their room and bake
Trans!Wendla
i feel like she’d come out in college?
she’s always known there’s something different about her and she doesn’t really feel like a boy
she grew up in a small conservative town and no one came out as gay if they were, never mind trans
her parents are also super conservative so she tries not to think about it
until she’s in college and her super cool roommate hanschen takes her to some gsa-type meeting
and wendla meets super cool trans girl ilse neumann who leads the club and talks about her experience being trans
and then everything makes sense to wendla
she goes up to ilse after the meeting and they go for coffee and eventually wendla is like “so that thing you talked about? i feel that” and thats how wendla discovers she was trans
her new besties ilse and hanschen are very supportive
the college she’s at is also pretty liberal and cool about pronouns
it’s still hard with dysphoria and people being jerks but wendla’s really happy
hanschen teases wendla about the “fog of sexual tension” between her and ilse
and wendla denies it even though she totally has a crush on ilse
after a year or so she and ilse start dating
ilse confesses her crush via love note bc she’s cute
such supportive gfs
Please tell me if yall have more i loved writing this!!!
The "the fire alarm went off and you were in the shower and wow you're hot, do you want my clothes or something?" au that no one had even thought to ask for but I knew that we needed anyway
this is 100% based off of my real college experience; you would not believe how many time the stoners make the fire alarm go off by accident, it's the Worst thing, and one of my friends saved a girl who was only in a towel from freezing to death by giving her a sweatshirt. Please enjoy!
Ilse is roused from her evening nap by the fire alarm.
“Fuckin’ Till 3,” She mutters, throwing her shoes on and grabbing her phone from the charger. She considers changing out of her basketball shorts and loose t-shirt, but she just grabs a sweatshirt from her desk as she checks the time. 4:27. She huffs. “Jesus, it’s been seven minutes, can they please calm the fuck down?”
No one responds, of course, because the alarm is loud enough to block any noise below a scream, and because she's alone because her roommate is in class.
The building is on fire and I'm leaving your stuff to burn, Ilse texts her roommate, Thea, as she leaves and locks their room. Thea responds by the time Ilse is in the painfully crowded stairwell, pretty quickly for someone who’s in class, good, im always looking for an excuse to drop out of college and live on the streets, then, give the till 3 boys my love and tell them to stop fucking smoking weed in rooms with fire alarms.
Ilse chuckles and pockets her phone, focusing all her energy on not tripping down the stuffed staircase. By the time she's gotten outside, she's been tripped four times, nearly knocked over twice, and elbowed at least a dozen times. I hate fire alarms, she thinks vehemently.
It takes less than a minute of asking around to confirm that no, there's no real fire, and yes, it was probably just the boys on the third floor smoking weed in their dorms, again.
“Tilly was supposed to be a calm dorm,” Ilse mutters to herself.
“You're telling me,” A feminine voice says. Ilse turns, surprised, and sees a dark-skinned girl in a towel.
“Um,” Ilse says, because Towel Girl is not only 1. In only a towel, but also, 2. Soaking wet, and 3. Unfairly attractive. “Couldn't grab clothes on your way out?”
Way to go, Ilse; let’s just be a dick to the cute girl, because that's totally how you flirt.
To Ilse's surprise, the cute girl laughs. “I was showering when the alarm went off, but I live on the second floor and I was sure that it wasn't a real fire, so I finished rinsing off before I got out. Unfortunately, my roommate forgot that I didn't have my key with me and she locked the door on her way out, so, you know. Towel's all I've got.”
“Man, that sucks. Do you want my jacket?” Ilse asks, then, thinking of something, “Actually, do you want my shorts too? I wear boxers, and even if I didn't, this shirt is big enough to hide it.”
Towel Girl visibly flusters, raising a hand to wave Ilse off. “I couldn't impose-”
“Dude, no,” Ilse says, “I'm insisting. Unless I'm making you uncomfortable for real, in which case I'm seriously apologizing and respectfully backing off.”
“No, no, you're fine, it's,” Towel Girl lowers her head and messes with one of the thick, dark waves in her long hair. She glances up at Ilse through her eyelashes. “Really nice of you. I just transferred here, actually, from the state school, and it’s, um. Nice.”
Ilse's heart skips a beat, she's certain of it. “Haha, well. I'm glad you think so,” Ilse says, staring at Towel Girl for a second more before shrugging out of her jacket and handing it to Towel Girl. “I'm Ilse, by the way. I try to make sure that people who get me to drop my pants at least know my name.”
Towel Girl laughs again, sliding on Ilse’s jacket. Ilse can't help but notice how it looks just the perfect side of too big on her. “Nice to meet you Ilse, my name is Wendla Bergmann.”
“Wendla,” Ilse repeats as she hands Wendla her shorts. “It's-”
“Old-fashioned, I know, my dad-”
“I was going to say it was beautiful,” Ilse says. Wendla stops, freezing for a moment and Ilse swears that she can see a slight blush under her dark skin. Ilse takes a deep breath. “Just like you.”
Wendla's eyes widen further. “That was a line.”
“It was,” Ilse confirms nervously, “Unless you're straight or not interested, in which case it was just a ‘gals being pals’ thing.”
Wendla tucks a strand of hair behind her ear and smiles. “No, I'm not straight, I'm just also not used to being hit on.”
“Seriously?” Ilse asks incredulously before she can stop herself. She slaps a hand over her own mouth after the words come out, flushing in shame. Wendla giggles.
“Seriously. I had one boyfriend in high school but that was,” Wendla averts her eyes, sighing, “High school, you know?”
Ilse doesn't, not really, because she spent high school in a fancy all-girls boarding school after her super rich great aunt got custody of her in 8th grade, but she nods anyway. “Well, you've got a card carrying bisexual hitting on you right now.”
“Card carrying?”
“Yeah!” Ilse says, reaching down for her phone and only hitting her thigh. She looks at Wendla, who's now wearing the shorts and the sweatshirt with her towel relocated to her hair. “In your left pocket, my phone is there. In the card sleeve on the back, there's a bisexual card. I got it at Pride last year.”
Wendla pulls it out and laughs. “I need one of these,” She says, then, shyly, “So, is this card carrying bisexual still interested?”
Ilse beams. “Definitely!”
Wendla smiles back, looking excited and nervous. “I mean, people are going back in? I'll have to get dressed, and return your shorts and sweatshirt, obviously, but we could go to the dining hall?”
“That would be great,” Ilse says, then, “Hey, you can put your number in my phone and you can call me when you're ready.”
“You just want my number,” Wendla accuses, but not meanly.
“I just want your number,” Ilse admits, “But did it work?”
Wendla holds a stern look for a second, before succumbing to giggles. “Yes, it was very smooth.”
Wendla hands Ilse her phone to unlock, and Wendla inputs her number before leaving for her own room. Ilse watches her go, shellshocked and still not believing that that just happened to her. She unlocks her phone, pausing to stare at Wendla's contact in disbelief for a moment, before thumbing to her roommate's number. She should've just gotten out of class. Ilse presses call.
“Yeah, hey, you will never believe what just happened. I have a date.”
I feel like a lot of people don't understand Ilse as a character and it really pisses me off. Like sure, she's super bubbly and happy but it doesn't mean she wasn't abused, sexually and possibly physically, and it doesn't mean she wasn't forced to run away and then stuck into the cycle of abuse again, being with men who threaten her safety because they can. Like I get that she's being positive despite the circumstances or even she's good at covering it up and smiling through the pain but most people don't give that depth to her. They make her Wendla's or Moritz's quirky, sarcastic girlfriend. Ilse has struggled out of situations that seem impossible to escape from. Ilse was handed shit over and over again in her life. Ilse, despite the fact her problems were clearly a lot bigger than Moritz's, wanted to help him because god dammit, no one helped her and she just had to survive. Ilse is allowed to be bitter and jaded and terrible with trust and terrified of herself because she's smart enough to know that the cycle of abuse exists and she won't excuse herself for abusive actions just because she got fucked over. Like anyone who actively ignores her abuse when writing her isn't writing about her at all. When you are abused, you don't get to just move on. It stays with you, whether you like it or not. How about step your Ilse game up a little bit smdh
👋🏻 hey I was wondering if you could do a fanfic of college!au wendilse? Love your writing and keep it up ❤️❤️

TW: Weed smoking because they’re in college, cursing, you know the usual
Wendla slammed the door of her dorm behind her and flopped down on her twin bed with tears streaming down her face. Today had been an awful day. Wendla forgot she had an eight am chemistry class and overslept. She missed coffee with Thea, which she looked forward to on Wednesdays. On top of that, she had painful period cramps which weren’t subsiding. And now she had to finish her economics project by next week with a partner that never did any work. Greta was a great friend, but she had zero work ethic. The entire day was just shit.
Wendla had only been lying face-down on her bed for a few moments before her phone buzzed. It was Ilse calling. Wendla broke into a relieved grin and answered.
“Hey beautiful” Ilse’s sweet voice came through the phone.
“Hey babe” Wendla said, voice cracking from tears.
“Aww honey!! What happened?” Ilse could tell Wendla was upset even without looking at her.
“Ugh, my day was so shitty” Wendla began.
“Aww!! Ok, don’t worry. I’ll be there in ten minutes with ice cream and ‘The Princess Bride’. Anything else you need just shoot me a text”
“Ilse you don’t-” Wendla began to protest but Ilse was already gone. Wendla smiled again. Once Ilse was set on doing something there was little that could stop her. It made Wendla feel better already that Ilse was on her way.
Sure enough, ten minutes later Ilse was at Wendla’s door.
“Ok so I brought ‘Princess Bride’ but I brought some others too in case you wanted something different, I got chocolate and vanilla ice cream because I didn’t know what you were in the mood for. And I also got-” Wendla cut her off with a hug.
“I’m just glad you’re here” Wendla whispered.
“Of course babe!! I mean you’re always here for me and literally all of our friends. And I hate when you’re sad. I would hug you back but I’m carrying stuff”
“Oh right!!” Wendla let go of her girlfriend to help her with the bags. After they set everything down Wendla flew back to Ilse’s arms.
“Shh, it’s ok baby” Ilse whispered into Wendla’s hair. “I’m here now. Do you wanna talk about it? You just wanna cry? That’s ok too”
“Mmm, we can talk about it” Wendla said. They moved to Wendla’s bed.
“Ok. And if you’d like, when we’re done talking, I brought something special” Ilse said with a mischievous look.
“What is it?” Wendla asked.
“You’ll like it, just talk to me first”
Ilse took a puff from the joint and passed it to Wendla.
“It’s so pretty” Ilse said in awe.
“Yeah. We’re lucky” Wendla said as she took a puff.
“You know something, Wendla?” Ilse asked.
“What?”
Ilse giggled, probably a result of the weed.
“The way the sun lights up your face and your hair like that, like it does right now, is really pretty”
Wendla blushed, half because of Ilse, half from her high.
“Awww, you’re sweet”
“You’re sweeter” Ilse took a puff from the joint. It was getting short.
“I hope we can always be together” Wendla sighed as she laid her head down on her girlfriend’s shoulder.
“Mmm, me too. One of these days, I’m gonna paint you like Jack painted Rose in ‘Titanic’”
“Ilse!!” Wendla said, half in shock at Ilse’s sudden profanity. Really, it wasn’t a surprise. Ilse got touchy-feely when she was high.
“Shhh, only cause you’re really pretty. With or without clothes” Ilse giggled.
“You’re silly” Wendla said lovingly. “If I was not high right now, your clinginess would be annoying”
“But you wuv me!!” Ilse moaned. Wendla laughed again.
“I doooo”
The joint was too short to smoke now. Ilse tossed it off the fire escape. The girls sat in comfortable silence, cuddled into each other, watching as the sun disappeared over the horizon.
“I wish we could stay like this forever” Wendla said quietly.
“Yeah, but what if we had to pee? And like, if we get hungry or something?”
“That’s not what I meant stupid” Wendla chuckled and gave Ilse a light shove.
“I knoww, I wish we could stay here too”
A little later Wendla said softly, “Thanks for taking care of me today”
Ilse kissed the top of her girlfriend’s head. “Of course baby. Feeling better?”
When Wendla and Ilse move into the big city, most of their friends are specifically worried about Wendla. As it turns out, Wendla’s stubborn attitude works well in the city where she glares at catcallers and has stomped the feet of people trying to get in her purse before. To the contrary, Ilse has a soft spot for people and will find herself stuck helping rowdy hitch hikers or giving her money to people who aren’t actually homeless.
