Easy Breezy

I’m officially done with open classes this year. This year I had a total of 7 open classes. Six open classes were for parents and 1 was for the teachers at my school. I must say that my CT and I killed today’s open class. Our open class was on lesson 11: What is your favorite subject? Everything was executed perfectly. I was a little nervous at the beginning (but I didn’t sweat or blush) but after that I was pretty relaxed. Why am I nervous? When you have a room of 10 teachers and 1 vice principal, it’s a lot of pressure. Some of these teachers have 10+ years teaching. Compared to them I have very little experience although I must say that I have improved significantly since I first started.

For our open class, my CT and I did three activities. We started class with a basic greeting followed by pass the ball. For pass the ball, I used some pictures of my students. It was awesome because they were happy, surprised and embarrassed to see some of their pictures. After our brief review, we went into the meat of open class, which is the station rotation activity. Basically there were 5 stations and each station had a different task. They include unscrambling sentences, doing a crossword puzzle, re-writing sentences, filling out their time table/schedule and filling in the blank missing words. Students started at different stations and we gave them 3 minutes for each station. My students had to fill out their worksheet. Once they were done, they rotated to the next station. My CT and I walked around to help students. Some of the teachers and vice principal went up to some of the groups to observe the activity. Everything went well but I don’t know why some of the students were panicking. I can definitely feel that some of my students were a little tense and felt rushed? Despite that I think they did a great job. After the station rotation, we went did the white board activity. Students were given a board, marker and eraser. Basically they had to write and complete the sentence by writing in the blank missing words. We wrapped up our open class with a quick flash card review. Open class was a success. The activities and timing was all on point. My CT and our open class was actually the last open class. All the other teachers had their open classes already. All of the teachers are actually discussing our open class with my CT. Of course I’m exempt because I wouldn’t understand what they’re talking about even if I was present.
