I've spent most of today lost in Brian Eno's ninth album 𝘈𝘱𝘰𝘭𝘭𝘰: 𝘈𝘵𝘮𝘰𝘴𝘱𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘴 & 𝘚𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘬𝘴. It's so easy to let yourself drift away listening to it. I really need to acquire a copy on vinyl. ▪︎ Another album that I've been listening to today is Wesley Schultz's debut solo album 𝘝𝘪𝘨𝘯𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘴. ▪︎ I'll be honest. I'm not a Lumineers fan and I couldn't have told you who Wesley Schultz was prior to listening to this. The album landed in my hands via a Vinylbox subscription, so I had no clue what I was going to be listening to. ▪︎ I dropped the needle with a completely open mind, and credit, where credit is due: this is a beautiful album. Basically it's a stripped back covers album. Schultz recorded it during lockdown in 2020 in homage to artists who have been a big influence on him. ▪︎ Warren Zevon's 𝘒𝘦𝘦𝘱 𝘔𝘦 𝘐𝘯 𝘠𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘏𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘵 and Jim Croce's 𝘖𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘰𝘳 (𝘛𝘩𝘢𝘵'𝘴 𝘕𝘰𝘵 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘞𝘢𝘺 𝘐𝘵 𝘍𝘦𝘦𝘭𝘴) are my favourite tracks here. The Warren Zevon cover is stunning and really hit me hard. ▪︎ I'd highly recommend giving this a listen. Album Review: The Lumineers - Cleopatra

Four years have passed since the Lumineers’ self-titled debut and the half-hour of music the trio came up with in the meantime hardly feels worth the wait.

Cleopatra, as the followup is known, features pithy composition and sparse instrumentation on its 11 taut tracks.

Songwriters Wesley Schultz and Jeremiah Fraites struggle to pair their best words with their best music. In fact, one of the strongest songs has no words at all; the album-closing “Patience” is an old-timey piano instrumental that clocks in at a paltry 1:37. Mostly, however, you get numbers like the lyrically intriguing title track, set to an uninteresting melody and dominated by a jangly electric guitar that begs for some rhythmic support.

There are songs about leaving (“Sleep on the Floor”), songs about being gone (“Long Way from Home”) and songs about being hopelessly in love (“Ophelia”). None of them are complete throwaways, but when you mine the singer-songwriter vein, you best come up with very good-to-excellent songwriting delivered via very good-to-excellent singing, and Cleopatra has neither.

Schultz spends much of the album flirting with falsetto voicings and this approach grows tiresome about midway through the set. And without a single track to reach out and pull the listener in, Cleopatra just plays on and fails to stoke any burning desire to revisit it after the initial round of getting-to-know-you spins.
